  • [HOW TO] Jailbreak Your iOS 5.1.1 Device With Absinthe 2

    {last updated May 30, 2012}

This OS X and Windows guide will teach you how to jailbreak various devices using Absinthe 2. The current version of Absinthe is 2.0.4. Note this is an UNTETHERED JAILBREAK, meaning you can reboot your phone just like you normally would.

This guide should be used with the following device/firmware combinations (if you're not sure, here's how to find your iOS firmware version and how to find your iOS device type):

    • iPhone 4S | 5.1.1
    • iPhone 4 | 5.1.1
    • iPhone 3GS | 5.1.1
    • iPod touch 3G | 5.1.1
    • iPod touch 4G | 5.1.1
    • iPad | 5.1.1
    • iPad2 | 5.1.1
    • The New iPad | 5.1.1

The Chronic Dev Team has released Absinthe 2. Absinthe 2.0.4 works with Mac, Windows and Linux computers. The tool jailbreaks most devices running iOS 5.1.1.

Since the jailbreak is intended for the newer software, it is recommend that you do a full DFU mode update from your previous firmware as this will overwrite any previous jailbreak data on your device and allow you to start fresh. After you have updated your firmware to iOS 5.1.1, you can follow the steps of this guide to jailbreak any of the devices listed above, in an untethered fashion.

    1. Begin by downloading the Absinthe 2.0.4 application for your operating system:

    2. Launch the downloaded file to open a virtual disk where you can either open Absinthe immediately, or drag the Absinthe application to your applications folder for future use.

    3. After you have opened Absinthe, plug in your iOS device and take note of how Absinthe auto-detects the device you plug in and the firmware it is running. If it is correct, click on the jailbreak button.

    4. After clicking the jailbreak button, the whole process is mostly automatic. Absinthe will jailbreak the device for you without the need to enter DFU mode. During the process, Absinthe will show many different stages of the jailbreak process as shown below.

While Absinthe is jailbreaking your iOS device, the screen will appear as if the device is beginning a restore. This is normal – do not panic as nothing is going terribly wrong. Additionally, do not unplug the device or start using it until Absinthe says, “Done, enjoy!” Once it says this, the jailbreak is finally finished!

After the jailbreak is finished, there is one more step. You must unlock your iOS device and find Cydia on your home screen. Launch it and Cydia will start the process of preparing the filesystem. This process takes a while, so be patient. While Cydia is doing this, your screen should look like the image below:

When Cydia finishes preparing the filesystem, the device will respring and you can start downloading and enjoying your favorite Cydia tweaks on your newly jailbroken iOS 5.1.1 device. Since the jailbreak is untethered, you can reboot your device freely and your jailbreak will remain. If you are new to the realm of jailbreaking, check out our Staff favorites post to learn about some awesome iOS applications and Cydia tweaks!

It's suggested that you restore. And it seems that in your case, it wouldn't be a bad idea. So if you still want to use Absinthe, go ahead and restore.

As far as Redsn0w, what error did it throw at you?

I'm on 4.3.3 JB with iPad 2. Can I just update to 5.1.1 from iTunes? Can I still get untethered JB from this?

      Thanks

yes you can, but its recommended that if its already jailbroken, you do a RESTORE instead of an UPDATE, then jailbreak again using redsn0w

Would it make a difference if I chose to Update right away instead of the Restore option?

Also, would the results be different using redsn0w than absinthe2?

      Thanks

if you choose the Update function, your phone may randomly crash, reboot, etc.

this has to due with the phone previously being jailbroken, and by clicking the update feature, itunes will/may overwrite some of those files used in the jailbreak process that is currently stored in the iOS system

it is BEST that you do a Restore, then jailbreak again using either absinthe or redsn0w, no difference

just make an itunes backup first

Anybody know how to fix this? Plz help! I am new to this forum but from all the ones I have looked at it seemed to have the most up to date & reliable info so far..thanks

Oh probaby should have told you that this was an AT&T phone now I have switched it over to a Straight Talk phone by using a sim card from straight talk..

Here are two errors I am getting inside of Cydia whenever I try to install a program
      1. Subprocess post-instalation script returned error exit status 255
      2. Subprocess/usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

Any idea what that means? It will not let anything install completely, I have downloaded it from Greenpoinson.com and a couple other sites thinking the download was bad, but couldn't be from that many diff sites....I need help & lots of it!!!
Install TetherMe from Cydia and you can go into the Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Settings Menu and Edit them as below:

      Cellular Data
      APN: att.mvno
      Username:
      Password:
      MMS
      APN: att.mvno
      Username:
      Password:
      MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
      MMS Proxy: 66.209.11.33
      MMS Max Size: 1048576
      MMS UA Prof URL:

You have to remove the :80 at the end of the MMS Proxy so.... From: 66.209.11.33:80 ------> To: 66.209.11.33

Once I activated cydia half of the applications on my first page disappeared; settings, messages, safari, phone, contacts, voicemail and more. I did back up the phone but none of them are coming back. I can call the phone and the contact shows. I can also send it a message and the message will show but if I try to open it I get a message "URL wasn't loaded" what does this mean and how do I fix it? I need this fixed asap!

Do they show up when your device is in safe mode by chance?

Unless you want to get really internal and stuff, you're better off restoring.

Are we still able to upgrade to 5.1.1 for iPhone 4?

Do we have to download a certain modded firmware or can we just get it directly from iTunes?

Directly in itunes is fine. 6.0 doesnt come out until the 19th so Apple is still signing 5.1.1.

I didn't bother reading thru all 22 pages, but I just had my iPhone 4 unlocked by AT&T and had to restore. I go to jailbreak with Absinthe, and the app didn't launch on my Mac. Apparently, Absinthe doesn't "run" on Mountain Lion. A quick search and all is well now.

Right click on the Absinthe icon and select “Show Package Contents”.

Navigate to the Contents/MacOS folder and right click on Absinthe 10.6 and select Open With…Terminal.

This will invoke the GUI interface of Absinthe, and you can now proceed with the jailbreak outlined in our iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak tutorial.

      Hi All,

Last night I tried to JB and unlock my wife's 3gs (locked to Orange) and failed miserably. I'll put this down to the fact that I had a bit too much to drink!

I did make, thankfully, a full backup of her old 3g beforehand as she is moving to a 3gs handset.

Can someone confirm that the following steps are correct please after I've done a restore as I've previously JB'd the phone unsuccessfully.

      1. Download Absinthe 2
      2. Follow the steps to install and JB.
      3. Let it do its thing
      4. Done.

If the above is correct do I need to do anything else to unlock it once its jailbroken? How do I get the backup from her old 3g on to the new 3gs, run a restore from iTunes?

      Cheers
      Daz
