  • [HOW TO] Jailbreak Your iOS 5.1.1 Device With Absinthe 2

    {last updated May 30, 2012}

This OS X and Windows guide will teach you how to jailbreak various devices using Absinthe 2. The current version of Absinthe is 2.0.4. Note this is an UNTETHERED JAILBREAK, meaning you can reboot your phone just like you normally would.

This guide should be used with the following device/firmware combinations (if you're not sure, here's how to find your iOS firmware version and how to find your iOS device type):

    • iPhone 4S | 5.1.1
    • iPhone 4 | 5.1.1
    • iPhone 3GS | 5.1.1
    • iPod touch 3G | 5.1.1
    • iPod touch 4G | 5.1.1
    • iPad | 5.1.1
    • iPad2 | 5.1.1
    • The New iPad | 5.1.1

The Chronic Dev Team has released Absinthe 2. Absinthe 2.0.4 works with Mac, Windows and Linux computers. The tool jailbreaks most devices running iOS 5.1.1.

Since the jailbreak is intended for the newer software, it is recommend that you do a full DFU mode update from your previous firmware as this will overwrite any previous jailbreak data on your device and allow you to start fresh. After you have updated your firmware to iOS 5.1.1, you can follow the steps of this guide to jailbreak any of the devices listed above, in an untethered fashion.

    1. Begin by downloading the Absinthe 2.0.4 application for your operating system:

    2. Launch the downloaded file to open a virtual disk where you can either open Absinthe immediately, or drag the Absinthe application to your applications folder for future use.

    3. After you have opened Absinthe, plug in your iOS device and take note of how Absinthe auto-detects the device you plug in and the firmware it is running. If it is correct, click on the jailbreak button.

    4. After clicking the jailbreak button, the whole process is mostly automatic. Absinthe will jailbreak the device for you without the need to enter DFU mode. During the process, Absinthe will show many different stages of the jailbreak process as shown below.

While Absinthe is jailbreaking your iOS device, the screen will appear as if the device is beginning a restore. This is normal – do not panic as nothing is going terribly wrong. Additionally, do not unplug the device or start using it until Absinthe says, “Done, enjoy!” Once it says this, the jailbreak is finally finished!

After the jailbreak is finished, there is one more step. You must unlock your iOS device and find Cydia on your home screen. Launch it and Cydia will start the process of preparing the filesystem. This process takes a while, so be patient. While Cydia is doing this, your screen should look like the image below:

When Cydia finishes preparing the filesystem, the device will respring and you can start downloading and enjoying your favorite Cydia tweaks on your newly jailbroken iOS 5.1.1 device. Since the jailbreak is untethered, you can reboot your device freely and your jailbreak will remain. If you are new to the realm of jailbreaking, check out our Staff favorites post to learn about some awesome iOS applications and Cydia tweaks!

Just follow the first step until you connect with internet using Wifi. The iPhone will be activated and the jailbreak button will be available.

CONFIRMED download 9B206 i found it on the web (can I mention websites?) if so let me know n ill tell u were i downloaded it from!

      1. download 9B206
      2. plug in phone via USB and put phone in DFU mode ( turn phone off, hold home and sleep/wake 10 sec then hold home until iTunes sees it)
      3. iTunes will say do you want to restore hit yes then select restore on iTunes/iphone screen while holding down SHIFT key, point to your 9B206 5.1.1 firmware that you just downloaded
      4. phone will restore,( if you get error on osx try on windows?)
      5. open absinthe 2.0.1 it will now recognize your phone, hit jailbreak
      6. enjoy
Does this work on a 3Gs 4.3.3/06.15.00 ? I tried to restore using downloaded 9B206 on a Mac (holding down "option", btw) and it said it was an incompatible file. Do I have to upgrade to 5.1.1 first, then restore to this ispw file?

      Thanks!

      look at my last post

for those of you that don't know what 9b206 is heres the scoop

apple put out a silent update to 5.1.1 on iphone 4 gsm only
the firmware 5.1.1 stays the same but the build number changes from 9b206 to 9b208 which absinthe 2.0.1 doesn't support 9b208 only 9b206
lastly to see if your iphone 4 gsm (at&t is gsm in the united states) has build 9b206 or 9b208 go to settings general about scroll down and it'll tell you which version of 5.1.1 you have!
So if you have 9b208 see my post above to fix this, you'd better hurry cause i don't know how long apple will continue signing it!

forget all i told you about this!

Absinthe 2.0.2 now supports 9b208 for iphone 4 gsm!!!!

Restore to 5.1.1 first. Then jailbreak with absinthe

error 3194 fix: open tiny umbrella, click advanced, deselect box that says set hosts to cydia on exit. Close tiny umbrella and try restore again.

error 21 fix: use snowbreeze/ireb/redsnow to enter pwned DFU before restoring to a custom firmware.

Apple is still registering iOS 5.1.1 SHSH Blobs, so this error can appear under the following conditions:

You have your HOSTS file blocking gs.apple.com
You have your HOSTS file redirecting gs.apple.com to Cydia server and you do not have any SHSH blobs on Cydia server
TinyUmbrella TSS server is running in background but you have not saved iOS 5.1.1 SHSH blobs on TinyUmbrella.
Solution to fix iTunes Error 3194
Check your HOSTS file and make sure you are not blocking gs.apple.com.
Make sure TinyUmbrella is NOT running in the background.
Try to launch https://gs.apple.com: It should open the Apple site, and not be redirected to the Cydia server.
We tested this, and it really worked! Did you encounter this error also? Or maybe other annoying errors? We will keep on testing the process today. If there are more possible errors like this we will post it as soon as possible! If you encountered a problem, leave your comments and we will get back to you!

Was this explanation about how to fix iTunes error 3194 useful for you?
