  • [HOW TO] Jailbreak Your iOS 5.1.1 Device With Absinthe 2

    {last updated May 30, 2012}

This OS X and Windows guide will teach you how to jailbreak various devices using Absinthe 2. The current version of Absinthe is 2.0.4. Note this is an UNTETHERED JAILBREAK, meaning you can reboot your phone just like you normally would.

This guide should be used with the following device/firmware combinations (if you're not sure, here's how to find your iOS firmware version and how to find your iOS device type):
    • iPhone 4S | 5.1.1
    • iPhone 4 | 5.1.1
    • iPhone 3GS | 5.1.1
    • iPod touch 3G | 5.1.1
    • iPod touch 4G | 5.1.1
    • iPad | 5.1.1
    • iPad2 | 5.1.1
    • The New iPad | 5.1.1

The Chronic Dev Team has released Absinthe 2. Absinthe 2.0.4 works with Mac, Windows and Linux computers. The tool jailbreaks most devices running iOS 5.1.1.

Since the jailbreak is intended for the newer software, it is recommend that you do a full DFU mode update from your previous firmware as this will overwrite any previous jailbreak data on your device and allow you to start fresh. After you have updated your firmware to iOS 5.1.1, you can follow the steps of this guide to jailbreak any of the devices listed above, in an untethered fashion.

    1. Begin by downloading the Absinthe 2.0.4 application for your operating system:

    2. Launch the downloaded file to open a virtual disk where you can either open Absinthe immediately, or drag the Absinthe application to your applications folder for future use.

    3. After you have opened Absinthe, plug in your iOS device and take note of how Absinthe auto-detects the device you plug in and the firmware it is running. If it is correct, click on the jailbreak button.

    4. After clicking the jailbreak button, the whole process is mostly automatic. Absinthe will jailbreak the device for you without the need to enter DFU mode. During the process, Absinthe will show many different stages of the jailbreak process as shown below.

While Absinthe is jailbreaking your iOS device, the screen will appear as if the device is beginning a restore. This is normal – do not panic as nothing is going terribly wrong. Additionally, do not unplug the device or start using it until Absinthe says, “Done, enjoy!” Once it says this, the jailbreak is finally finished!

After the jailbreak is finished, there is one more step. You must unlock your iOS device and find Cydia on your home screen. Launch it and Cydia will start the process of preparing the filesystem. This process takes a while, so be patient. While Cydia is doing this, your screen should look like the image below:

When Cydia finishes preparing the filesystem, the device will respring and you can start downloading and enjoying your favorite Cydia tweaks on your newly jailbroken iOS 5.1.1 device. Since the jailbreak is untethered, you can reboot your device freely and your jailbreak will remain. If you are new to the realm of jailbreaking, check out our Staff favorites post to learn about some awesome iOS applications and Cydia tweaks!

Same issue as the others who have 3194 error. Fix with this: open tiny umbrella, click advanced, deselect box that says set hosts to cydia on exit. Close tiny umbrella and try restore again.

I was able to jailbreak my friend's Ipad 3 with absinthe 2.0.2 first time with absolute perfection. I guess it's time for me to get one.

a quick question, is firmware 5.1.1 a worthy upgrade to 5.0.1???

if not then I really don't feel like going through the hassle of re-installing all the apps and tweaks.

Can you provide us a little more information on your iPhone and pc or Mac your using? It could be something as simple as the cable you're using or the USB port may be defective. Try using a different sync cable or different port. But also reply with a little more information about your iPhone.

Hey, sorry for the completely ignorant question, but i'm trying to unlock my iphone4 on 5.1.1 to other carriers. What do I do after Jailbreaking through Absinthe? Is there an app in Cydia I have to get?

I did the full restore to new device 5.1.1 I have now restored 14 or more times now & every time it fails to jailbreak I restore it from my Mac to ios version 5.1.1 9B206. When I start the jailbreak it stops/freezes at the waiting for reboot.....etc like its still loading & it never completes the jailbreak. I have waited up to 1 hr for it to finish but still nothing. so I start all over again after I restart my computer, delete absinthe from my computer then redownload it. I have tried every version of absinthe & now I'm using absinthe 2.0.2 for mac. I need help & this is my 10th jailbreak & this has been the worst so far.

I did a full restore to my 3GS (yes, still on old technology, but until I can afford a shiny new 4s, here I am!) to 5.1.1. I had the phone jb'd using iPad bb 06.15.00 and carrier unlocked with Ultrasn0w. It worked great on 4.3.3 and I got a wild hair up my butt and wanted to upgrade to 5.1.1! I figured with Absinthe and the Ultrasn0w fixer I'd be all set.

But now I can't get past the activation. It's asking for an original SIM. Is there a way around this so I can proceed with Absinthe? (I'm on a Mac, btw)

Thanks for all the community support in this forum... you guys are the best!!!

If you dont have a sim from the carrier the phone is locked to you can use redsnow to hactivate it.

I have to agree-- I don't see any benefit in having gone from 5.0.1 to 5.1.1, as I did on my 4S. I don't even see any improvement to the battery life, which I had no complaints with before.

Thanks for that super quick reply, Simon. I have hactivated my 3GS and am now restoring my files (it's taking frickin forever... I have a LOT of music on there). Then I will see if I can carrier unlock it with Ultrasn0w fixer, then Ultrasn0w, correct? I am assuming that I won't need to use Absinthe since Redsn0w just JB'd my phone, right? Now that my iPhone is activated, is there any advantage to using Absinthe over Redsn0w? Or is that even a possibility?

Thanks for your infinite knowledge on iPhones!

      :
Figured it out. After the jailbreak, all my themes were put in a new folder altogether. Pre-JB, they were in var/Themes/dgK2m9. After the JB, a new folder, var/Themes/6o9v1K was created, with the themes cloned in it. The new one has become the active Themes folder. Once I made my locale change in it, my weaher was updated.

Yes, ultrasnow and ultrasnow fixer (you can install them at the same time of you want). If you are able to reboot and still use cydia then you have old bootrom and don't need absinthe.
If you need to use redsnow to boot the phone then you have new bootrom in which case you can simply install rocky raccoon 5.1.1 Untether in cydia.

hey guys I have an iphone 4S jailbroken on 5.0.1 & unlocked with sam method. I have backed up my sam ticket with cookie. My concern is if I update to 5.1.1 and jailbreak my baseband will update from 1.0.14 to 2.0.12. Will that affect my unlock with the sam backup ticket? Has anyone with an iphone 4S updated to 5.1.1 jailbreak and succeeded in unlocking their iphone with cookie on 5.1.1 with the 2.0.12 baseband?

So I'm trying to Jb my i4 (5.1.1.), but Absinthe 2.0 (I've tried both 2.0, 2.0.1. and 2.0.2) just keeps crashing on me. What is wrong? It runs fine for the first minute or two, but it always bugs out somewhere along the four minute mark.

Dunno why, since I'm not doing anything out of the ordinary. I keep having to clear the previous JB attempts, and start oer, only to end up with the same result over and over again. I've re-downloaded the software, but nothing helps.

      I'm soo frustrated right now...
