  • [HOW TO] Jailbreak Your iOS 5.1.1 Device With Absinthe 2

    {last updated May 30, 2012}

This OS X and Windows guide will teach you how to jailbreak various devices using Absinthe 2. The current version of Absinthe is 2.0.4. Note this is an UNTETHERED JAILBREAK, meaning you can reboot your phone just like you normally would.

This guide should be used with the following device/firmware combinations (if you're not sure, here's how to find your iOS firmware version and how to find your iOS device type):
    • iPhone 4S | 5.1.1
    • iPhone 4 | 5.1.1
    • iPhone 3GS | 5.1.1
    • iPod touch 3G | 5.1.1
    • iPod touch 4G | 5.1.1
    • iPad | 5.1.1
    • iPad2 | 5.1.1
    • The New iPad | 5.1.1

The Chronic Dev Team has released Absinthe 2. Absinthe 2.0.4 works with Mac, Windows and Linux computers. The tool jailbreaks most devices running iOS 5.1.1.

Since the jailbreak is intended for the newer software, it is recommend that you do a full DFU mode update from your previous firmware as this will overwrite any previous jailbreak data on your device and allow you to start fresh. After you have updated your firmware to iOS 5.1.1, you can follow the steps of this guide to jailbreak any of the devices listed above, in an untethered fashion.

    1. Begin by downloading the Absinthe 2.0.4 application for your operating system:

    2. Launch the downloaded file to open a virtual disk where you can either open Absinthe immediately, or drag the Absinthe application to your applications folder for future use.

    3. After you have opened Absinthe, plug in your iOS device and take note of how Absinthe auto-detects the device you plug in and the firmware it is running. If it is correct, click on the jailbreak button.

    4. After clicking the jailbreak button, the whole process is mostly automatic. Absinthe will jailbreak the device for you without the need to enter DFU mode. During the process, Absinthe will show many different stages of the jailbreak process as shown below.

While Absinthe is jailbreaking your iOS device, the screen will appear as if the device is beginning a restore. This is normal – do not panic as nothing is going terribly wrong. Additionally, do not unplug the device or start using it until Absinthe says, “Done, enjoy!” Once it says this, the jailbreak is finally finished!

After the jailbreak is finished, there is one more step. You must unlock your iOS device and find Cydia on your home screen. Launch it and Cydia will start the process of preparing the filesystem. This process takes a while, so be patient. While Cydia is doing this, your screen should look like the image below:

When Cydia finishes preparing the filesystem, the device will respring and you can start downloading and enjoying your favorite Cydia tweaks on your newly jailbroken iOS 5.1.1 device. Since the jailbreak is untethered, you can reboot your device freely and your jailbreak will remain. I have a factory unlocked iPhone 4s. It has 5.1.1 on it and it works fine with T-Mobile. Is it possible for me to load Cydia on it? Do I still need to jailbreak it in order to load Cydia and is it safe to do and, if yes, what do I use to jailbreak it? I wouldn't want to screw up my unlocked situation. Thank you in advance for responce.

I moved your question to a more appropriate thread.

Yes, you have to jailbreak to install cydia. You can use Absinthe (this thread shows you how).

Hello experts foremost im new here, and i apologize if this isnt the right board for me to post my concern. Im a certified NOOB about idevices.

Im from the Philippines. i have this iphone 4 version 4.1 firmware 02.10.04, my sister gave this to me from Japan because she now had the latest, the one with Siri. im searching on youtube in order to unlock and use this here in the Philippines. But the First thing i did, and it is now jailbroken using LIMERAIN. and then using GEVEY SIM to unlock. BUT after i did the jailbreak, all the installed Apps&Games wont open/it dont start. and so i removed some of the apps like Skype and going to the APPStore to donwload a new skype but it says "IN ORDER TO DOWNLOAD,.. I NEED TO UPDATE THE VERSION or i need to be in that version required for the Apps etc. whatever."
So guys please help what should i do? should i update this to the latest version 5.1.1 the new one featured? i want that. PLease guys i need your Help.

You can but make sure to use a custom firmware made with snowbreeze or redsnow so that you preserve your baseband. Otherwise the Gevey won't work to unlock it anymore.

I keep getting error - device is already untethered with greenpois0n even after I delete everything and start over.

      How do I re-jailbreak?

i got it, thank you though.

i had to download a fresh copy of the .ipsw and restore from that, the erase and delete then restore was not working.

i've now got a jailbroken new ipad on 5.1.1 (wifi) but i cant get my restore from itunes to work. it keeps sending me into the recovery process you get when you first set up your i device.

sorry, i don't know how to edit posts or else i'd add this to my previous one

i figured it out. you can use icloud really easily to restore after jailbreak

do the normal steps, but after its jailbroken go into settings and "reset all settings"

this will send you back to set up mode and you can choose to restore from icloud there. this works for me because my backup to my computer never worked.

First of, check what Gevey SIM you're using. Gevey SIMs are specific to the firmware it was designed for. What was the original FW when you had your Gevey sim? That should only work with that version. You will need to buy a new Gevey SIM for fw 5.1.1.

To jailbreak your 511, you can use pwnagetool or any tool that supports 5.1.1 for iphone4. then, once finished, plug it back to your itunes and update it from your itunew backup.

      thanks,

Hey guys, I need a little help here. I just jailbroke my iPhone 4g 5.1.1 using absinthe. All went well and I can access Cydia fine. I've even downloaded several apps from there, including mywi which remembered all my previous settings. BUT I can't get winterboard, five icon dock, and others to work. They download and show up on my device, and I can run them and make changes to them (ie choose different themes for winterboard), but nothing "takes". I can't use 5 icon dock, or nonewsisgoodnews, etc. Did I miss something?

      Thanks in advance,

The restore deletes everything fom your iPhone, you can then restore froma backup and your apps will be back but not the jailbreak.

Just run absinthe or redsnow or another tool to jailbreak again

Your phone goes back to stock factory settings.
      No.
Nothing, you get your backup restored.
      The jailbreak will remain.

It was a fluke, you or the JB did something wrong.

      You should restore and reJB.
