  • Chronic Dev Team Releases Absinthe 2.0

    *UPDATE*
Absinthe 2.0.1 is out fixing a hang up that occurred for in certain situations for some users. Get it here.

The Chronic Deve Team released Absinthe 2.0 today as promised. Let the jailbreaking begin.

The Absinthe jailbreak tool supports the following devices:

    • iPad 1, iPad 2 (2,1—2,2—2,3 ) iPad third generation (3.1—3,2—3,3)
    • iPhone (2,2—3,1—4,1)
    • Support for the newer 32nm iPad 2 (iPad2,4) will be added later.
As usual the jailbreak instructions are as follows:

    1. Make a backup of your device in iTunes by right clicking on your device name under the ‘Devices’ menu and click ‘Back Up’.
    2. Once your backup is complete return to your device and go to Settings – General – Reset – Erase all Content and Settings. This will make the jailbreak process much faster.
    3. Open Absinthe and be sure you are still connected via USB cable to your computer.
    4. Click ‘Jailbreak’ and wait…. just be patient and do not disconnect your device.
    5. Once jailbroken return to iTunes and restore your backup from earlier. Right click on your device name under the ‘Devices’ menu in the left panel of iTunes and click ‘Restore from Back Up…’ then select the latest backup you created before. (restoring this backup will return all the content previously on your device ie, apps, photos, etc.)
Enjoy the jailbreak and make sure to let @pod2g, @MuscleNerd, or any other member of the Chronic Dev Team know of any problems. Also, make a donation to show your support. Remember these guys do all of this work pro bono.

As of now the Chronic Dev Team servers don't appear to be going into analeptic shock, so downloads should be fairly smooth.

Again, I jailbroke a fairly new (April) iPad 3 16gb running stock 5.1.1 using my iMac in basically the blink of an eye. Backed up (maybe 20 seconds) then ran Absinthe (maybe 45 seconds to a minute) then it rebooted and I put in the backup (maybe 12-15 minutes). Took a lot longer to get Cydia to load anything, gave up, came back later and tried again, it loaded everything and I did some customization. Truly an easy jailbreak. I keep reading here about fails and not working and I don't get it. Mine was as easy a jb as I've ever seen.

Here's what I did for a 4S and it worked flawlessly.

      1. Make a backup.
      2. Go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content And Settings
      3. Let the phone do it's thing, then when it turns back on, go through setting up your phone until your phone is activated. (After choosing wifi, do not select set up new Phone or restore from backup)
      4. Run Absinthe 2.0.1
      5. When it comes back, it should be a factory-new phone, just with cydia.
      6. Open iTunes, restore your backup.

Thanks for all the help guys, hope I could be of some.

I have seen 2 users say their iPod app isn't working after jailbreak. A friend of mine called me to say the same thing. My friend didn't back up and restore to a fresh iOS. I am guessing this might be a factor. I will report back later with his results.

I use him as a test dummy before I go for the jailbreak.

Finally! After 8 hours and doing every single thing that was recommended it works! I've been jailbreaking since the 1.0 days and never had a jailbreak kick my *** this bad. I'm so glad it works and even though Cydia is getting hammered I've gotten just about everything I wanted installed.

2.0.1 will not work. Hangs at waiting for reboot on a factory unlocked iphone 4s freshly restored to 5.1.1. Keeps showing error -5 can't connect to lockdown. The phone is activated no password, etc. etc.

      Guess I'm waiting for 2.0.2...

I am on a tethered 5.1 right now. If I just want to "untether it" do I just need to download Rocky Racoon? Is it worth going to 5.1.1? What do you gain in features to go from 5.1 to 5.1.1? Much appreciated.

You get a lot more security for your device. I updated mainly for safety.

On my iPad 2, I tried 2.0 and 2.0.1 several times each, with and without a fresh restore, but Absinthe always hangs at "Waiting for reboot."

Update: My friend has a fully functional jailbroken iP4 after restoring a clean iOS and jailbreaking on the Welcome Screen.

If I'm running 5.0.1 do I backup my iPhone, the erase it then update, then jailbreak, then restore? Which order do I do those steps in?

I backed up my 4s, upgraded to 5.1.1, deleted everything, then followed the rest of the steps listed. The restore from backup was jacked up (hung and then stopped completely), but after two tries it went through. Just keep trying.

Can someone please inform me on how to do this with an iCloud restore instead? Because I do not use iTunes. Thanks.
