How would you like it if Siri would activate and show you the week’s weather and current outdoor conditions every morning after you acknowledge your iPhone’s alarm that wakes you up? A new Siri add-on/jailbreak tweak hybrid dubbed Wake With Weather by iOS developer rjharris will introduce this feature to your Siri-enabled iOS device. The tweak works with any iPhone 4S or any jailbroken device with Spire installed.
The way the tweak works is actually pretty great. The tweak doesn’t just read off the weather every time your alarm goes off, but you have to actually dismiss the alarm for the tweak to kick in. The tweak is great for when you are waking up in the morning and want to know right off the bat if the day is going to be good for your planned activities, however if you use alarms throughout the day for work and for other kinds of activities, this tweak could get in the way of things. Luckily for those of you with multiple alarms, there are multiple settings for this tweak that can limit it to only your wakeup alarm.
The tweak operates by automatically invoking Siri and querying a command that you type into a text-box in the preferences pane, which is in the Settings application. For the tweak to work as intended, you should type something like, “what is the weather forecast” so that Siri is invoked and can look up the weather forecast for your current location. The preferences pane is very extensive and is shown in the extended screenshot below:
From the preferences pane, you enable and disable the tweak on demand. This is good because it gives you control over which alarms the tweak will speak for. For example, you can enable the tweak after every night so it only works with the wakeup alarm you have set and then disable it afterwards so that your work alarms don't use the tweak's features as well. From the preferences pane, you can also choose which elements of the weather Siri will speak after you dismiss your wakeup alarm. The list of things you can have Siri announce to you after your alarm is acknowledged include:
- Your current location
- Today's maximum temperature
- Today's minimum temperature
- Today's forecast
- Tomorrow's maximum temperature
- Tomorrow's minimum temperature
- Tomorrow's forecast
- The current temperature at your location
- The feels-like temperature at your current location
- The current condition of your current location
Below the myriad of customizable switches, you can set the weather question as aforementioned, and you can test the tweak to see how it will work with the button right below the text box. This will give you an idea of what Siri will say every morning when you acknowledge the alarm. Another fail-safe for keeping the tweak from announcing the weather after alarms throughout the day is a timeframe setting. From here, you can enable the timeframe setting and set a certain time for when you want the tweak to work. Any alarms you have outside of that timeframe will not be acknowledged by the tweak. The last option in the preferences pane allows you to have Siri read out all of the selected weather elements further up in the preferences pane even when you are simply querying Siri for the weather and not only when an alarm goes off. This little addition makes Siri a more powerful weather companion than ever before.
If you would like to be greeted with the weather every morning that you wake up via your iPhone alarm, then this tweak is for you. Even if you don’t use alarms, the tweak could still be useful to you because it gives you the ability to have Siri read more weather information out loud to you rather than just saying something like, “It looks like some rain is coming your way.” The tweak is well worth the $1 for the functionality, but only if you love knowing about your weather.
