  • New Report Claims Next iPhone Will Have Larger 16:9 Screen

Rumors of a larger iPhone display refuse to die and like most urban legends have little actual evidence to support their legitimacy. That said, another display rumor has surfaced claiming Apple is currently testing two new prototypes of the next generation iPhone.

While it’s not a huge revelation that Apple is testing one of their products before it’s released, the screens of the prototype iPhones reportedly feature a vertical resolution of 1136 pixels, up from the current generation's 960 pixels. The increased resolution also increases the diagonal height of the phone to 3.95 inches, feeding into rumors of a 4-inch display.

These prototype phones are floating around Apple HQ in thick, locked shells in order to disguise the exterior design to “undisclosed” employees. We know of two next-generation iPhones in testing with a larger display: the iPhone 5,1 and iPhone 5,2. These phones are in the PreEVT stage of development and are codenamed N41AP (5,1) and N42AP (5,2). Because Apple reserves certain models for internal-only usage (such as the N96 phone we previously reported on), we’re not sure which of the two devices will make its way into the world later this year. — 9to5Mac
Apparently the iOS 6 will take advantage of the taller screens by adding support of an extra row of icons. Also, the new resolution puts the iPhone’s screen aspect ratio very close to 16:9, which would mean native support for 16:9 videos.

I don’t doubt Apple employees are testing cloaked devices on the Cupertino campus, but I do doubt that Apple plans on implementing a 16:9 screen ratio in their next phone. It’ll make the device awkwardly long, creat problems for developers and non-16:9 content, as well as kill the scaling ease of the 4:3 iPad screen and the 3:2 iPhone screen.

      Worst of all worlds.
Buyers would tell Apple to take a running jump.

Is Apple does go with a bigger screen it should be taller and wider. Taller to have 5 roll of icon and wider to even everything out withe five set of icons going down and a cross with a total of 6 roll including the dock.

I would have to agree, Apple loves to have everything proportional right? I mean, thats part of their iOS Human Interface Guidelines, no?

AGREED! I personally don't like when writers talk along these lines!

Apple has kept the simple home button because "future tech" isn't always better they realize that an apple home button does its function well and has good accessibility.

I wouldn't mind a larger screen however. But I agree they will have to make it wider. But then again I don't need a bezel on an iPhone like I do on the iPad. But well see I have high hopes for the new iPhone

I get tired of this stupid argument. If it's above 4" it's = to your 10" iPad? Stupid is as stupid does.

Come on let's all get a grip. They won't get rid of a 3.5" option but it's time to move on up as the Jefferson's said. I would like a larger device and so would many others. The fact that it may be over 4" (doubtful but you never really know) in no way makes it anything like an iPad.

      1) DFU mode?
      2) software button = screen space = people would be mad if their 4" screen was only 3.75 with a virtual home button

Haha +1 for using Tweetbot and following @robdelaney and @__michaelj0rdan.

On topic: I'm sure if they were going to do a 16:9 aspect ratio they would've done it with the first iPhone. I could see them changing the screen size but not the aspect ratio.

I would have to agree here! Its getting to be June already. That's 3-4 months till announcing and releasing. I would think they are getting certain stock inventory stocked up for assembly by now. So that way by end of July and August they can start assembly of the new iPhone and be ready for shipment for release.

Really interesting articles. I'd definitely go for a longer iphone since I'm currently using a battery case, and my 4s is already longer than normal roughly half inch. I feel no problem holding it

what happened to the argument that Apple kept the iPhone at its current screen size because it makes it easier to use with one hand as your thumb can easily access any part of the screen while only holding it with one hand? that seemed like a very good idea, which is why I wonder why Apple would suddenly move away from that idea?

Most people don't believe they will. It's just people like spreading rumours to wind up the 'I need a bigger screen' trolls.

Apple's not stupid enough to break perfect compatibility with over 600,000 apps just to make the screen a little larger. Better to stay at 960x640 and have 288 PPI or bump it up to 1440x960 and maintain compatiblity and give it a nice PPI boost.

iPhone 4s release: Woooh! 3.5" screen. Anything above 3.5" is too big because 3.5" is perfect for people's fingers!

New iPhone Rumors: Pssshhh, 3.5" is nothing. Everyone knows that 4" is the way to go.

      Android Fans: smh...

There's a surprising amount of wasted space on the 4S. Very noticeable in white. They could pack a larger display without changing dimensions of the phone. They make a substantial change to the form factor and 2/3 of the accessory market is going to have to re-tool. And I can't see everyone rushing out to replace everything. But those would be one of the markets to watch: cases. What are they doing?

Apple ALWAYS does a great job with design. I don't think any of these rumors have ever panned out. Who makes money from these mock-ups and rumors? What is the point? Why am I writing this comment, thus supporting the rumors and mock-ups which I cannot tolerate anymore? I'll be back.

That would be a very strange resolution. Video would display better, but that's about it. Besides, who plays lots of movies on their tiny phone anyway? Get an iPad.

Maybe this is an iPod Touch screen?
