  • Pod2g and MuscleNerd Publish Jailbreak 5.1.1 FAQ, Users Can Safely Upgrade to 5.1.1

"You can safely upgrade to 5.1.1 now if you want to be ready" Pod2g tweeted after reposting a Jailbreak 5.1.1 FAQ MuscleNerd published earlier today.

As usual unlockers who want to preserve their baseband should hold off on the upgrade to 5.1.1. Below is the FAQ in its entirety.

    • All info below is tentative and subject to last minute refinements
    • @pod2g's 5.1.1 jailbreak+untether is working out great. All devices are covered except for AppleTV3,1, which currently has no path for jailbreaking.
      — the initial 5.1.1 plan used a kernel exploit from @westbaer which unfortunately precluded use in iPod3,1 and iPhone2,1
      — @planetbeing stepped up and provided a kernel exploit that covers both of those. Those two JBers are the bomb!
    • The 5.1.1 A5 JB is very similar to the A5 5.0.1 JB. @pimskeks has done a tremendous job supporting both 5.0.1 and 5.1.1 in absinthe
    • Similar to 5.0.1, there will also be a 5.1.1 CLI "cinject" binary and redsn0w version of the 5.1.1 JB+untether. Absinthe, cinject, and redsn0w will all provide the same JB in different fashions.
      — timing is indeterminate. Plans are for this week, but a number of factors can influence that.
    • For those wishing to donate, we've set up a new 5.1.1 paypal URL: paypal
    • Please don't pirate AppStore apps (seriously, please do not).
It appears the release of the 5.1.1 jailbreak is imminent, but MuscleNerd is careful to note that the timing is "indeterminate." Nothing worse than setting deadline and missing it, especially with something as unpredictable as a jailbreak.

It probally works but I'm gonna stay with the devs jailbreak. I seen ion1c posted a link on his twitter page about it with a link.

Dumb question time, but did you install any tweak to prevent OTA updates? That may be causing an issue. Also too, did you set tiny umbrella back to have iTunes look for apple servers instead of cydia's?

I'm curious what has stumped these folks on the new firmware found with the ATV3? I've heard lots of rumors from the ATV Flash site that Apple has really cranked down on this one so people are not pirating downloaded HD .mp4's from Apple and sharing. In other words, paying for a 2 day rental, open ssh and saving the mp4 permanently.

I would be worried if they implemented this into iOS6... but it seems that Apple leaves these exploits in the iPhone/iPad none the less? I suspect they need the creativity from the Cydia Supported Community? Thoughts?
The apple tv3 doesn't have enough surface area, whatever that means....

When or if Ultrasn0w will be updated for this jailbreak? I asked because I still want to preserve my baseband. I can see the reasoning if you have a iPhone 4, because Apple now is unlocking them if you ask them (I'm almost at the end of my contract - I got my phone on drop day in 2010.) I am still on 1.59.00 which is still unlockable with Ultrasn0w, but I want to keep my baseband and wait for what Apple will come up with this year with the potential of a new iPhone 5.

Bottom line is I want to: A. Keep my phone and wait until Apple come up with a new phone
      B. Keep the original baseband to further the value of my phone for resale

So should I let Apple unlock the phone and don't worry about an Ultrasn0w solution? And will the updated version of Redsn0w (or Green Posion - or any other tool) will preserve baseband?

That is NOT from the dev team, that is a commercial package that is expensive and limited to A4 only devices.. it's kind of an insult to the jb community.

You're best to just wait for the proper jailbreak which supports all devices aside from ATV3 of course.

VulnDisco Mobile Untethered Jailbreak Is Sucking Solution, Says Pod2g | iJailbreak.com

I think I'll stick with Pod2g's opinion here and just stay away from it.. it's only for A4 devices anyway and it apparently is quite expensive..it'll cost you a cool grand with everything you need to run it ..

A lot of people are going to mistake InteVyDis untether solution for a consumer product. The first hint that this jailbreak is not intended for you (unless you’re a professional security researcher) is that the software InteVyDis’ plugin relies on is Immunity CANVAS, which costs $995 (plus $495 per 3 months for updates). That price is before the undisclosed amount which InteVyDis is charging for their VulnDisco Mobile plugin.

It'll only matter if they closed the holes. Unless they do that, the jailbreak should still work with little to no adjustments.
