Apple’s design of the volume HUD (heads up display) seemed like a nice touch to me, however if you feel that the design of the HUD is distracting and gets in the way of things you are trying to look at, then a new free jailbreak tweak dubbed HUDChanger by iOS developer Ron Melkhior may interest you as it brings a smaller, less intrusive interface to your fingertips. As shown above, the new change is not smack in the middle of the screen and the size of the HUD is substantially decreased.
The new HUD that comes with the tweak seems like it has a few drawbacks. One of the most obvious being that it is so much darker than Apple’s HUD, which can actually obstruct your view even worse than Apple’s version of the HUD. The other major drawback has to do with the fact that it doesn’t support landscape mode. One example of why a person might want this tweak is to keep Apple’s HUD out of view in the middle of a video, which this tweak seems to have completely missed by not supporting landscape mode:

On a positive note, the new HUD also shows your volume percentage in numeric format instead of with indicators, which some people may prefer. It’s also nice how the new HUD is so small that it barely takes up any of the screen space. This is great if you are looking at photos, as it has a low profile and doesn’t lay smack in the middle of the display the way Apple’s does. It seems that the new HUD seems to disappear much faster as well, allowing you to get back to what you were doing as soon as possible.
Finding this tweak useful is subjective to opinion. While the tweak does have a less-obtrusive interface, some people may prefer the nice design of the stock HUD indicator to this one. I would personally rather not use it until it at least sees landscape support, as seeing a sideways indicator in the middle of a movie seems to be a small detail that I know Apple would have paid attention to while creating a HUD for iOS. Until then, it sort of feels incomplete.
Since the tweak is free, if the design looks nicer to you, be sure to give it a try. It doesn't come with any options to configure. Simply install it to use it and uninstall it to stop using it.
