  • [Review] GrabberApp - Use the Camera Grabber to Open An Application

Apple’s iOS 5.1 and iOS 5.1.1 Camera Grabber allows you to swipe up to launch the Camera application from the lock screen instead of double-pressing the home button and then tapping on the camera button that was put on the lock screen with iOS 5.0 and iOS 5.0.1. It even includes a nice and fluid animation. Unfortunately, this wasn’t very handy for the people that don’t use the camera that often. For this, we turn to the magic of jailbreaking.

Joining the Cydia store today is a free jailbreak tweak dubbed GrabberApp by iOS developer Ron Melkhior. The tweak allows the user to launch an application of their choice instead of the Camera application with the Camera Grabber for as long as the tweak is enabled. The application to be opened with the Camera Grabber is chosen from the preferences pane in the Settings application. The preferences pane also allows the tweak to be enabled and disabled at any time and is shown below:

The broad range of applications to use with the Camera Grabber is endless as the tweak works with all stock iOS applications and includes those downloaded from Cydia and the App Store. The tweak requires iOS 5 and a Camera Grabber, so if you are not running a jailbroken iOS 5.1 or iOS 5.1.1 device, then Camera Grabber for iOS 5 (another free jailbreak tweak by Ori Kadosh) will be installed to make up for the absence of the Camera Grabber.

GrabberApp will not bypass any pass codes if you have them set, meaning all security will remain in tact after installing the tweak. The tweak also retains the same great animations Apple implemented for the Camera Grabber for any application you choose to use with the tweak. If you think the Camera Grabber could be used for something more useful than the Camera application, then be sure to give GrabberApp a try.

Sweet. Does it lag or anything? Is it still smooth? Does it use much ram?

Very nice. Smooth, and works well. Only thing i'd like to see is a way to change the icon on the lock screen to match the app you're launching.

      Well done.

Completely froze up when trying to open camera+... Also seems to effect activator actions. Don't know if someone noticed different.

I'd thought of this ages ago yet the developer of the camera grabber said it wasn't possible as it was as quoted "Camera grabber is meant to mimic Apple's iOS 5.1 functionality and it does not work this way there"
That's great news it can do this now
