  • Redsn0w 0.9.11b1 Released

As we reported just earlier this week, MuscleNerd was working on an update for redsn0w that would allow iPhone 4S, iPad 2, and The new iPad (A5/A5X) users to downgrade their firmware if they had their SHSH blobs saved. iPhone 4S and iPad 2 users have the ability to downgrade as low as iOS 5.0.1 and The new iPad users have the ability to downgrade as low as iOS 5.1. A4 users have been able to downgrade since the dawn of time due to a shiny bootrom exploit.

But until now, that ability has been limited to those older devices (if you have an older device and don’t know how to do that, check the popular tutorial sites or ask in the comments below).

Starting with redsn0w version 0.9.11b1, those with newer devices (iPad2, iPad3, and iPhone4S) can join the downgrade fun too! In a radical departure from previous versions of redsn0w, it now directly supports restoring IPSWs to your device. The first use of this new feature implements a hack that allows A5 downgrades without a bootrom-level exploit.
Today, the new version of redsn0w that MuscleNerd promised has been released, allowing A5 iOS device users to join in on downgrading their firmware. MuscleNerd says that the new downgrading process doesn't require a bootrom exploit. The version, dubbed redsn0w 0.9.11b1 is compatible with Mac OS X and Windows. If you are running redsn0w 0.9.11b1 in Windows, it is highly recommended that you run the software in administrator mode by right-clicking on the icon and clicking, “Run As Administrator.” The download links for both of the new redsn0w versions can be found below:

The new feature allowing A5 iOS device users to downgrade their firmware can be found under Extras>Even More>Restore from the redsn0w navigation menu. To use this new feature to downgrade your A5 device, you must have your SHSH blobs saved. For example, if you want to downgrade your iPhone 4S to iOS 5.0.1, you must have your iOS 5.0.1 SHSH blobs saved. Apple is no longer signing iOS 5.0.1, so if you haven't saved them already then you won't be able to save them now. Apple also has the ability to patch this downgrading method in a future firmware update, so take advantage of it while you can.

Another warning that the iPhone Dev-Team makes us aware of is since the new downgrade measure updates the iOS firmware before downgrading, it will update your baseband. For this reason, if you are relying on an unofficial iPhone unlock, do not use this new downgrade method until a workaround can be found. If you used the SAM technique (now patched by Apple) to unlock your iPhone, then you can use this new downgrading method without losing your unlock.

One last warning from the iPhone Dev-Team is since the new version of redsn0w is built with a ton of new code, they recommend using the more stable redsn0w 0.9.10b8b unless you plan to be taking advantage of the new downgrading feature. This will give them some time to work out the bugs. There is no reason to run this new version of redsn0w over your existing jailbreak because there are no improvements to the jailbreak in the latest version of redsn0w.

If you are ready to finally have the freedom to downgrade your iPhone 4S, iPad 2, or The new iPad, then you’ll definitely want to download this new redsn0w release. Be sure to thank the iPhone Dev-Team for this amazing news!

Just so it is clear. I was on 5.0.1 and restored right back to 5.0.1 with redsnow. You don't need to update your iphone yourself to 5.1.1, redsnow will update it for you. Redsnow is buggy. It took me 3 tries before it worked.

Watch your redsnow pop ups. The first pass on the restore it will display restoring to hacked iphone4,1_5.1.1, the second time it says restoring to iphone4,1_5.0.1 (or whatever firmware you are restoring to.

5.0.1 firmware doesn't exist for an iPad 3.

that is awesome news, thanks for the update!

Please let other users know if you encountered any errors.

Did you put your iphone into DFU mode first before running redsn0w?
Was it successful on the first try?
Did it update to 5.1.1 then downgraded to 5.0.1 in one process without any issues?

      Let us know!

Finally I got it downgraded, it took me a few tries but I did.
The only thing is iCloud backup is not showing any of my backups. I gues I'll update again, get my backup from iCloud and update it to my pc.

Your baseband will be upgraded doing this but the gevey ultra S works with the most current baseband right now so you should still be fine.

As long as you have 5.0.1 SHSH then yes. But it will be upgraded during the process.

hey guys, redsn0w is now updated to support the (9A406) SHSH blobs for those that didnt have their (9A405) blobs previously...

be sure to put your iphone in DFU mode before running redsn0w for downgrading to eliminate any restore issues!

Ok here is the deal. Today I up adapted it again from 5.0.1 because I had lost my iCloud backup. Updated and them did a backup on iTunes. So I plugged my phone again and tried to downgrade again but instead I got another failed restore. After a few minutes my son came up to me to tell that his iPod was on restore mode.when I get home I'll try to downgrade again without the network. I'll let you know if I was succesfull

Well here's my experience...first time I attempted it I got the update failed message.
Second time it got the same failed message but I let the phone sit there and it booted back up and after the setup on it, it's running 5.0.1

I'm confused as to how this works. Since it can restore A5 devices, I'm assuming it doesn't need an APTicket. Does this mean that we can use iSHSHit/TinyUmbrella from here on out without worrying about APTickets and recovery mode?
