  • Want to Downgrade Your A5 Device Firmware? Keep Watch for Redsn0w Update

To all of you A5 and A5X device owners out there, we admire your patience and nerves of steel as you wait for a way to downgrade your iOS devices and have a stable way to jailbreak without the fear of losing it forever after every jailbreak tweak you install. On the other hand, A4 devices have had a pretty stable way to downgrade and rejailbreak at their leisure.

The good news is, we all should finally be able to relax. According to MuscleNerd (Tweet shown below), a new version of redsn0w is on its way that will allow A5 and A5X devices to have their firmware downgraded. Sounds great right? Well, there’s a catch – you need to have the SHSH blobs saved for the firmware you want to downgrade to (remember when we told you to do that, just in case?). Additionally, the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 can be downgraded to iOS 5.0.1, however the new iPad can be downgraded only to iOS 5.1 because that is the firmware the new tablet was running as soon as it was released, meaning there is no possible older software to run on it.

MuscleNerd also clarifies in his Tweet that the downgrade method does not incorporate anything by iH8sn0w and that the new version of redsn0w will not create any legal issues. The new, upcoming redsn0w release will support the iPhone 4S, iPad 2, and the new iPad. There is no indication pointing to the fact that the new release of redsn0w will carry an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1 and iOS 5.1.1, however A4 devices can still enjoy a tethered jailbreak on either firmware. A5 and A5X devices do not have any jailbreak on either of those firmwares.

If you are one of the unlucky few that needed to restore their A5 device after attempting the jailbreak and installing a buggy tweak, then this news should be a burden off your shoulders. The only factor now is patience as we wait for the new release. Anyone with an A4 device will still be able to downgrade and rejailbreak as usual with the upcoming release of redsn0w. If you're an A5 device owner and haven't saved your SHSH blobs yet, we highly recommend that you do so you can take part in the new redsn0w release when it comes out.

Stay tuned and we will let you know when it's out!

Does this mean that if I didn't save my iOS 5.1 SHSH blobs for my 'new iPad' and that a jailbreak comes for iOS 5.1 for the 'new iPad' that I can't get it since I didn't save my SHSH blobs? If so, I mine as well upgrade to iOS 5.1.1

You should be able to still save 5.1 SHSH right now with tiny umbrella. Better do it soon though.

No it doesn't mean that.. SHSH blobs are only required to DOWNGRADE .. this downgrade is not related to a jailbreak.

In order to downgrade to 5.0 for example, you have to have your SHSH blobs from 5.0 .. being that iPad 3 came with 5.1 it can NEVER go to 5.0 ...

Ultimately every time you update your firmware you should immediately capture your SHSH blobs for that corresponding ios version so you can restore to it later when apple stops signing it.

I always use tinyumbrella a few days after a new firmware drops just because. And each time I get a new device I run tinyumbrella on it just to grab that firmware shsh even though I can't jailbreak it. Like one of my new 4S I have came on 5.1 so I grabbed the blobs for it just incase.

Can you over write your blobs? I know I saved it when 5.0.1 came out, I'm just not sure if I did it again since apple stopped signing :/
