Sometimes we need quick access to a dictionary. Sure, there are plenty of dictionary applications in the App Store, but why would you want to download a dictionary application when you can use the built-in iOS dictionary on demand? A new free jailbreak tweak dubbed SpotDict by iOS developer Ron Melkhior allows you to define words quickly using SpotLight as shown by the screenshots above.
The tweak is very easy to use. You simply type the word you want to define into the SpotLight search bar and tap on the new dictionary button to pull up the built-in iOS dictionary with the word you typed in the search bar loaded up from within the dictionary and defined for you.
It’s a great idea to use a tweak like this over a third party App Store application because the application will simply take up storage space to install. Since this tweak uses a built-in dictionary that is already present on the device, there is no fear about running low on your storage.
In terms of appearance, a better-looking dictionary button probably could have been used, however most iOS users aren’t using SpotLight often enough to notice it that much. It automatically resizes the search button for the best appearance. The best part is that it uses Apple’s own built-in iOS dictionary. It’s a very sharp-looking interface with an easy-to-understand design. Functionally, the tweak is very zippy and defines the word correctly every time. The tweak does seem to have a bug that causes the keyboard to intermittently not appear if you scroll to SpotLight too quickly.
SpotDict does not support the iPad and requires iOS 5 to install. There are no options to configure and you will have to uninstall the tweak from Cydia to disable it. If you think quicker access to a dictionary while on the go is an important thing to have, then be sure to give this tweak a try.
