  • [Review] iCleaner - Clean Up Your iOS Device of Junk

Most of us simply use our iOS device from day to day, taking its speed and fluidity for granted. What most people don’t pay much attention to would be that the iOS operating system, like all others, still keeps caches and many files become obsolete as they build up over time. These junk files can slow down performance and worse, take up your limited, valuable space.

If you take a moment to refresh your sources in Cydia today, you will find a new free utility application dubbed iCleaner by iOS developer Exile.90. The application works similarly to the popular CCleaner utility application for Windows and Mac OS X – cleaning the computer of junk files that accumulate and take up space.

iCleaner is capable of removing all of the following:
    • Safari cookies, browsing history, cache files
    • Application WebClip caches, cookies, temporary files, snapshots, in-depth application file cleanup (useful/important information isn't touched)
    • Log files and crash reports
    • System cache files and databases
    • System temporary files

iCleaner also features a smart scanner, which can detect if you have specific applications installed, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, which are constantly adding their fair share of files to your iOS device’s storage. The smart scanner will remove in-depth files from these applications that you don’t need, drastically improving loading speeds and performance.

Using the application is very easy. When you install it, you will find a new application on your home screen, which you can launch to start the system cleanup. After the cleanup is finished, you will be asked to respring the iOS device. Alternatively, if you prefer command lines over graphical user interfaces (GUI), you can use a Terminal client and run the command, “iCleaner” as root to perform its functions. If you don't run it as root, it will not work correctly.

As far as functionality goes, it does remove unused files from the iOS device as a quick iFile search will show. Everything continues to work correctly after use, which confirms that it only removes files you don’t need and not ones that are critical to an application’s performance. In terms of appearance, the application icon looks very nice on the home screen, supporting the retina display and having a good design.

Being a free tool, we could recommend this to people that like browsing the Web or using cache-obsessive applications on a daily basis. It's certainly not something you would need to run every single day. This utility would make a good monthly cleanup tool.

It's a good start but needs a lot of work! I'm not sure why it removes the autocorrect learning cache, I've never seen that file get "Too big". Seriously needs a checkbox system like PKGBackup to let us choose what specifically to allow it to clean!!!

This killed BiteSMS for me. I have a red "notification bubble" with an exclaimation point on the icon. When I try to launch it, it immediately crashes to springboard.

Anyone else having this issue? Ive tried to delete BiteSMS and reinstall but it never goes through the downloading process, only "preparing" and "configuring" then prompts for "restart springboard".

People are having so many problems because of iCleaner...

I don't think I'm gonna try this right now.

But I realized that most of the problems are related to cydia apps...

Wish I had that before I sold my iPod Touch 4G, but thankfully the buyer didn't care about the junk data

It cleaned up 36MB. Okay still not the greatest but it cleaned some. But after a respring, my phone is running incredibly slow. Everything takes 2-3x as long. Typing on the keyboard lags behind a ton. I can finish a text that is 100 characters long before it displays 30 characters. Unlocking my screen via Android Lock XT is now incredibly difficult because it's too slow to register my movements. Something with this app is slowing down my phone and I don't know why.
it does this as well to my phone.. bloody hell.. i think i have to restore due to this app... for some reason after i use icleaner, whenever i open sms or any apps it hangs for 2~3sec before it loads.. sigh.......................

I tried it out; freed up 500MB. Wasn't much but my i4 does seem to run faster. I haven't had any problems except all my subscriptions from YouTube are gone. Not a big deal.
