  • 2/3 of U.S. to Have Verizon LTE Coverage This Weekend

It's going to be a big weekend for Verizon and its customers.

Verizon Wireless today confirmed that its 4G LTE network will cover more than two-thirds of the U.S. population this weekend when 27 new markets come online and another 44 markets are expanded as of April 19th.

“This year represents a year of growth and investment in our 4G LTE network," Verizon says, "which stands out by virtue of its superb combination of coverage, speed and the variety of devices that we offer customers.”

This development is only fueling rumors that Apple will introduce a 4G LTE-ready iPhone this fall. If so, both Verizon and AT&T will be ready to provide coverage over much of the United States by then. With Apple currently offering LTE compatibility through AT&T and Verizon on the new iPad, it seems inevitable that such an attribute will find its way to the next-gen iPhone.

“Verizon Wireless 4G LTE is the premier wireless data service in the nation, with more than six times the geographic coverage of our nearest competitor’s 4G LTE network and now available to more than two-thirds of the nation’s population,” said David Small, chief technical officer of Verizon Wireless. “We will continue to introduce new markets and expand covered markets to ensure even more wireless users across the United States can take advantage of the benefits that 4G LTE brings to consumers, small businesses and enterprises."

That all sounds well and good.. But with the troubles Apple is having with regard to their 4G iPad, it would seem that Apple may need to provide more bands to support more networks since iPad's can just rely on wifi, but people who buy iPhones will demand that they get the '4G' on their phones that they were promised...

It will be another 10 years before AT&T even comes to that amount of coverage but they will put the charges on it well before then.

The "troubles" apple is having with the 4G iPad is very, very tiny in comparison to AT&T's nearly complete lack of 4G at all.

I'm sure any problems will be long sorted before we get LTE here in the UK....

The 3G auction was in 2000, it was not 'till 2003 we got a 3G network.
The LTE auction isn't until 2013 and everyone is trying to stop EE using existing frequencies.
I think we'll have to wait a while.
Even then, the 'New iPad' (AKA iPad3) doesn't support European frequencies, maybe by the time we get it the iPad 6 / iPhone 8 will do...

In my area, North Texas, AT&T and Verizon are the main players. Sprint is here but the data on Sprint is Edge speed and TMobile barely works for voice calls.

Impressive, over six months ahead of schedule.
