Have you ever wished you could hide and show your iOS dock the same way you can on your Mac? With a new jailbreak tweak dubbed SwipeDock by iOS developer Cykey, you can. SwipeDock gives you a ton of options to configure to get the exact look and animation you want. The two screenshots above show you how it looks before the dock is hidden and then what it looks like after the dock is hidden.
SwipeDock’s extensive options from the Settings application allow you to set your own animation for hiding and showing the dock, choose what happens with your paging dots, and configure how you want to invoke hiding or showing your dock. You can choose between the built-in activation methods of swiping, or you can use an Activator action. The Activator action might be a better alternative for any Zephyr users. The preferences pane is shown below:
From the preferences pane, you can enable and disable the tweak on demand, which is a great thing to be able to do. Below that is the box for choosing your dock hiding and showing animation – we will get back to that soon. Under that is the ability to change the duration of the animation with a slider for adjusting how fast or slow the animation will be. 0.1 seconds is the minimal time and 3 seconds is the slowest animation speed SwipeDock supports. Under the slider is a switch allowing you to make the dock fade while the animation takes place – it helps add depth. The add row feature lets you have an extra home screen row to replace the dock when it is hidden – enabling or disabling this feature requires a respring each time. Below that is a page dot setting box, which we will get back to, and last but not least is the ability to choose between your Activator action or being able to swipe up and down to hide and show the dock. You can pick the number of fingers you will use to swipe up and down.
Getting back to the animations and page dots, you have quite a few options to pick between. The animations are what display when you hide or show the dock. For the animations, you have all of the following choices:
- translate down
- translate left
- translate right
- translate bottom left
- translate bottom right
- rotate and zoom in
- zoom in
- zoom out
- rotate and zoom out
As far as the page dots go, you might or might not want them to show when you hide the dock just because they might make the screen look awkward. Cykey gives you all of these options for your page dots:
- don't hide
- hide with dock
- always hide
- move with dock
In terms of value, 99˘ is not a bad price for all the options Cykey is giving you. Everything depends on your desire to hide and show your dock on demand. Maybe you have applications on your dock you don’t want your kids getting to, or maybe you want to hide them from your significant other. Whatever the case might be, you can use SwipeDock to help hide those applications from view. When you do hide the dock, the rest of your home screen applications elegantly move into place, spreading out to fill the screen and the glass-like dock image disappears with the docked applications.
The great part about SwipeDock would be that it not only supports the iPhone and iPod touch, but also the iPad, giving you even more space on your home screen to enjoy your wallpaper. If you choose to use fingers to swipe to hide the dock, you can choose between one, two, or three fingers, which offers great customization for the large iPad screen. The tweak is a pretty cool one and works as advertised without any noticeable bugs. No icons are added to the home screen.
