Gartner Predictions Project iPad Being Leading Tablet Through 2016
According to new tablet sales projections from Gartner, Apple is set to sell nearly 73 million iPads in 2012 and remain the market leader through the year 2016. The total worldwide tablet sales are to reach 118.9 million units this year with Apple accounting for 73 million of those. The total sales will grow 98% from the year of 2011 based on the company’s projections.
The research firm currently see’s Apple’s iOS platform maintaining its position as the dominant tablet operating system. It is being projected that Apple’s share would climb to 61.4% of tablet sales by the end of this year. Gartner even see’s Apple maintaining the top position in the industry as Microsoft launches Windows 8 later this year.
According to Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner, “despite PC vendors and phone manufacturers wanting a piece of the pie and launching themselves into the media tablet market, so far, we have seen very limited success outside of Apple with its iPad.” This is due to vendors struggling to “compete on price and differentiate enough on either the hardware or ecosystem, inventories were built and only 60 million units actually reached the hands of consumers across the world. The situation has not improved in early 2012, when the arrival of the new iPad has reset the benchmark for the product to beat.”
The Android platform is again finishing right behind iOS this year. The firm believes that 37.9 million tablets sold will install the Android platform. At a distant third is Microsoft, which is forecast to sell 4.9 million tablets this year.
According to Milanesi, many competitors have waited to see what the Cupertino California company would be bringing out this year as very few announcements have been made. It is rumored that many vendors are waiting for Windows 8 to be released, hoping that the Microsoft brand could help them reach consumers.
Even by 2016, Gartner still believes that Apple will continue to lead sell roughly 170 million tablets in a single year. Trialing behind will be Android at 138 million and Microsoft, who is seen accounting for 43.6 million tablets in 2016.
