The iOS 'slide to unlock' feature is a nice, elegant way of unlocking an iOS device. It is nice and pocket-proof – making it hard to perform while in your pocket by mistake. The only downfall is its security. Apple includes a pass code system for security, but tons of people want different ways to secure their iOS device besides a number pad or text-based password. A new jailbreak tweak dubbed Stride by iOS developer Adam Bell lets you draw a pattern and then apply that pattern towards unlocking your iOS device.
The screenshots you see above are of the pattern-setter you will use to pick a pattern and apply it to your iOS device. It is accessible from the Settings application from the Stride preferences pane. You will be asked to enter your drawing three times for confirmation. After you have confirmed it, you can press the sleep button of your iOS device to lock it and then press it again to display the lock screen. When you slide on the ‘slide to unlock’ slider, you’ll get a new interface:
The interface overlays your lock screen wallpaper with a grid-like appearance made for you to draw your pattern on. After you draw your pattern successfully (it turns green), the iOS device will unlock the same way it normally would. If you draw the pattern wrong, it will flash red and refuse to unlock the iOS device. That being said, it makes a good customization feature for iOS to make it the way you want it. You aren’t bound to a specific nine-dot grid like you are on Android and you can draw anything you want to.
The interface includes two buttons – one on the bottom right and one on the bottom left. The bottom left button is an arrow that will put you back at the 'slide to unlock' bar. The bottom right button is a grid button – if you have a pass code set, this button will take you to the keypad so you can enter your pass code instead. If you don’t have a pass code set, it will force your iOS device to unlock without the need for drawing a pattern.
Stride also comes with a preferences pane that allows you to enable and disable the tweak at any time you want to. You can also choose to skip over pass code entry for this tweak instead. From this pane you can pick your own pattern and set it for unlocking your iOS device. Setting the pattern does not require a respring or any action on the user's part.
This tweak has a very nice implementation as well as a great interface and will recognize your patterns even when you draw things slightly sloppy. There is a small problem that makes it very difficult to unlock the device with Stride when you slide on an iOS 5 notification to unlock and open the application you have an notification. This will be fixed in a future version of Stride and the developer will also be adding a feature that will let the user choose whether or not Stride can force an unlock and bypass the pass code.
Stride is not compatible with iPad.
