  • Apple Supplies iPhone Unlock Codes Through iTunes


    AT&T started allowing out-of-contract customers to unlock their iPhones on Sunday and reports confirm the process is accomplished through iTunes.

    According to those who have unlocked their devices Apple applies the unlock codes to the device after restoring the device through iTunes. However, getting to that point isn’t the most straight-forward or customer friendly process.

    According Apple Insider customers wanting to unlock need to dial 611 to speak with a customer service representative, after which they are met with a prohibitively lengthy wait in order to speak with a technician. Once the technician is on the phone the customer needs to answer a series of questions to ensure that the user is eligible for the iPhone unlock.

    Once AT&T confirms the user is eligible for the unlock AT&T emails a .pdf document to the user detailing the remaining steps involved in the unlocking process. The four step process includes:

    1. Opening iTunes and verifying you have internet access
    2. Connecting your iPhone using the dock connector USB cable.
    3. Backup and restore your iPhone using iTunes
    4. After restoring your iPhone will be unlocked.


    If the unlock is complete users are met with the message “Unlock Complete. Congratulations, your iPhone has been unlocked. To set up and sync this iPhone, click continue.”

    Leave it to AT&T to turn a simple four steps into a long time-consuming process. Have any MMi members unlocked their iPhones yet? Was it quick, or filled with long wait times and awesome “Please hold” music?

      I have deactivated with Redsnow every day since and they (3) ip4 iphones won't unlock. My sister-in-law called on her old iphones only hours before I did and I was able to get hers unlocked within 24 hours. Her 3GS I just turned off Ultrasnow and put in a t-mobile sim and itunes activated it. Her ip4 was not jailbroken, but I deactivated it with redsnow and put in the t-mobile sim and again itunes activated it and unlocked. My other ip4 (3) won't unlock yet. I've been checking every day. I don't know why mine are taking so long and hers were so quick. She has an AT&T account and I don't.

      You dont have to be an ATT customer. I got my iPhone 4 done last week and I dont live in the US and have never been a ATT customer.

      I called CSR and told them I brought an iPhone 4 32g out of contract full price to use on my girlfriends line and now I want it unlocked to use for travel she then ask for the IMEI and the next day I had the confirmation email. Side note brought the phone of Craig's list the day before I places the call lol

      Here's another way to look at how AT&T is slightly ahead of the rest. We strayed from the original posting about unlocking phones. Sprint paid nearly 1.5x the amount per phone than AT&T. IMHO, because of that, Sprint will not provide the unlocks. Verizon, I think, only provides unlocks for older devices and has a much lengthier process for unlocking a device than AT&T's new process (which is still ridiculously long). So at least AT&T is making up for small down falls.
      Dude! ATT speeds suck. You really should do speed tests and compare to Tmobile, you will see the truth. Customer service is a joke.

      I can confirm that this method worked for me. I was using my iPhone 4 which had been locked to a Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile GSM) contract. I requested through Telekom that they unlock the iPhone 4 and they told me it would take 48 hours for Apple to process it. They also stated that a restore would be required, however, I simply inserted my new SIM card and plugged into iTunes, at which point iTunes stated that an UPDATE to my SIM card Activation was available. it downloaded something and bingo, my iPhone 4 was unlocked. I assume the same process would work on an AT&T phone as the iPhone 4 is exactly the same hardware.

      I hope this helps. Avoid a restore whenever you can!
