  • Starting April 8th AT&T Will Finally Unlock Your iPhone For You

AT&T is listening to customers and providing them with a service they should have from the start?

I know I canít believe it either, but AT&T will now unlock your iPhone, the only catch? Your 2-year contract needs to be expired. The unlock will allow users to use their iPhone on any other carrierís network that is compatible with the device.

Beginning Sunday, April 8, we will offer qualifying customers the ability to unlock their AT&T iPhones. The only requirements are that a customerís account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee. ó AT&T
The new policy seems to be in response to an iPhone owner who contacted Tim Cook after AT&T refused to unlock his off-contract iPhone 3GS. The 3GS owner was moving to Canada and wanted to continue to use his phone after the move. AT&T eventually unlocked the device after being contacted directly by Cookís office (that had to be an awkward conversation).

While there are any number of hacks and unlock workarounds, this new policy offers the more patient among us to finally escape AT&Tís suffocating lack of service, customer care, and commitment to slow network expansion.

I called on the morning of the 8th and told I will receive email but still nothing.

I believe if you are still an ATT customer, it's much faster. If you're not, they have to check and see if the original person that got the phone has good account standing (meaning they do not own money but does not mean the account needs to be active). As long as the original buyer paid for everything (either ETF or finished the contract), it is good to go. But I guess this takes time for them to check. I will post back when I get updated.

they'll sometimes ask for proof of purchase, and those of us that don't have it likely won't be able to get the unlock. unless you call more than once.

TO EVERYONE WITH A IPHONE AND NO RECIEPT:

If You Need A Reciept, Call Any Apple Store And Tell Them You Need A Duplicate Reciept, They Will Ask You For Your Serial Number,
And They Will Email It To You..
This Is What I Did. And I Got A Duplicate Reciept From Apple (But I Knew My iPhone Was Bought There).
I Faxed It off To AT&T And I Have A "Resolution" Date of April 19Th.

      Hope This Info Help's Someone.
      Happy Unlocking.

From what I understood, to enact the Unlock procedure, you have to do it via iTunes with a restore. If this is true, wouldn't you/I lose the jailbreak???
      Thanks~

You do not need to restore. All you have to do is put a sim card from a carrier that is not the carrier the phone was locked to then connect the phone to itunes. iTunes will then unlock it.

If the phone was hactivated then the phone will need to be deactivated with either redsnow or SAM before connecting to itunes.

Official unlock method not working for me. Plz someone help.

I am having iPhone 4 originally locked to AT&T. Got without contract and I am eligible for unlock. Both apple and AT&T confirmed that my phone is unlocked according to their database . But I tried all possible ways nothing makes my iPhone to get unlocked. Here is what I did but no use.

[Currently my phone is in ios 5.0.1 and it is jail broken and unlocked with ultrasn0w. Currently I am in India and trying from here only]

      - I tried back up and restore. No use.
      - I tried updating iOS 5.1 with customised firmware to preserve my baseband. (currently I am in 1.59) and even it says invalid sim.
      - I deactivated through redsn0w and tried with iTunes and no use.

Can anyone help me how to get my iPhone unlocked officially ?

Note : now I downgraded to ios 5.0.1 with preserving my baseband with the help of stitching tool in redsn0w.

Did you confirm that you gave them the correct IMEI number?

I wish I could report good news, but... here's what happened:
      1) I called AT&T & conveyed my wish to have my iPhone 4S unlocked because I was moving to Canada.
      2) I said I was no longer a customer & when asked for my old cell# I stated I couldn't remember it.
      3) Next, I was asked for the IMEI & within a minute I was told that my phone was listed as NOT UNLOCKABLE!
      4) When I inquired, as to WHY that status was associated with my phone, the rep. simply said they didn't know!
      5) Finally, after a little complaining, I was given a case# & told that I'd be contacted within 5-7 business days!

      UPDATE:

To anyone interested in Unlocking their iPhone 4S:

I was running on T-Mobile via Gevey Adapter. I initiated an online chat session with AT&T. They asked for my IMEI# & about 5 min. after providing it, an agent instructed me to connect to iTunes & Restore, whereby I would then be Unlocked... BUT, considering I didn't want to upgrade to 5.1 (losing my jailbreak), here is what I did INSTEAD:

      1) Connected to iTunes with T-Mobile/Gevey Adapter & waited... nothing!
      2) Removed Gevey & inserted just T-Mobile SIM & waited... still nohting!!
      2) Powered my iPhone 4S completely off, waited a few minutes & then powered it back on...
      3) Connected to iTunes & nothing... UNTIL, after about 6-7 minutes, while conducting more online research, I heard a noise & suddenly the phone said "Activating"!!!

Consider that I was told 2 hrs. earlier via the phone that my phone was NOT Unlockable!

      Copy of the chat session:

Stacy: We have reviewed your request and confirmed that you are eligible to have the requested iPhone unlocked.

Stacy: To complete the unlock, simply:

Stacy: 1. Open iTunes on your Mac or PC and verify that you have internet connectivity.

Stacy: 2. Connect your iPhone using the dock connector to USB cable that came with your iPhone.

Stacy: 3. Backup and restore your iPhone using iTunes .

Stacy: For information on backup and restore, please visit iTunes: Backing up, updating, and restoring iOS software .

Stacy: 4. After restoring, your iPhone will be unlocked.

Stacy: Additional information on unlocking can be found at iPhone: Troubleshooting authorized unlock issues .

Stacy: Would you like me to e-mail the instructions for unlocking the phone?

You may need to update your baseband then. Gonna be a tough leap of faith to do so though if that isn't the problem, since there will be no going back to that golden baseband you have. Tough decision.

So I called AT&T on April 8 to have my 3GS unlocked. Did it thru the technical support chat on their website. They said I had to fax in a copy of the receipt of the phone which I did the following day. On Thursday I received an email saying my unlock request was approved and the phone was now unlocked. Went into iTunes to to sync and finalize the unlock. I didn't want to restore so I put in a T-Mobil sim card. Nothing happened. So I did a full restore and still nothing happened. No message saying congratulations your iPhone is now unlocked. Called AT&T to find out what's going on. They said my case was still open and the iPhone hadn't been unlocked yet. The email was a mistake! They are backed up with request to unlock. So I lost a jailbreak when I didn't have to. No too bothered that I lost my jailbreak by restoring as this is not my main phone but if you value your jailbreak you may want to verify with AT&T or Apple that your iPhone is actually unlocked when you receive email saying it is now unlocked.

Few years ago, my friend gave me her iPhone 3GS. But it was locked to AT&T.

So now AT&T has the unlock process going on. Is there any way i can contact AT&T support without calling them? I'm not staying in US.
I tried using the AT&T Online Chat, but it requires an AT&T Wireless number.

Can someone enlighten me about this?

That would depend on their policy. You can give them a call or mail your query. Its unlikely that you would get any solution.

I bought an Iphone 4 from a friend who upgraded to the 4s. I called AT&T on the 8th and explained this. They said I would get an email in "48-72 hours". Got the email 2 days later, with the unlock instructions. Unfortunately, the phone started having hardware issues...battery wouldn't charge on any charger and the phone mic stopped working (the top mic was fine for apps). I went to the Apple Store today and paid $149 for a replacement Iphone 4....got home and put in the Tmobile sim and it worked! I had to activate with the AT&T sim, but after that the TMobile one worked.

THEN, I jailbroke it (it came with 5.0.1) and was greeted with "no service". Called AT&T and explained that this is my replacement and I need it unlocked, since I just handed Apple the unlocked one. They said it was ineligible, but took the details and logged it anyway. I called Apple and spoke to a supervisor, who said he was also going to chase it up and agreed that it should be unlocked since I handed them an unlocked phone.

I await an email, or solution to why I lost my unlock...

got my confirmation today that my iPhone is eligible to be unlocked. as soon as i got home, i opened iTunes, removed my AT&T sim card and inserted a T-mobile sim card on my iPhone 4 and connected it to iTunes.... without doing the back-up and restore, now my iPhone is unlocked.
