  • Starting April 8th AT&T Will Finally Unlock Your iPhone For You

AT&T is listening to customers and providing them with a service they should have from the start?

I know I canít believe it either, but AT&T will now unlock your iPhone, the only catch? Your 2-year contract needs to be expired. The unlock will allow users to use their iPhone on any other carrierís network that is compatible with the device.

Beginning Sunday, April 8, we will offer qualifying customers the ability to unlock their AT&T iPhones. The only requirements are that a customerís account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee. ó AT&T
The new policy seems to be in response to an iPhone owner who contacted Tim Cook after AT&T refused to unlock his off-contract iPhone 3GS. The 3GS owner was moving to Canada and wanted to continue to use his phone after the move. AT&T eventually unlocked the device after being contacted directly by Cookís office (that had to be an awkward conversation).

While there are any number of hacks and unlock workarounds, this new policy offers the more patient among us to finally escape AT&Tís suffocating lack of service, customer care, and commitment to slow network expansion.

Pretty nice. I unlocked an iPhone 4s for T Mobile and the guy lost MMS, if apple and AT&T unlock it, will this allow unlock to all ports allowing all services?

Yes it will. But you have to meet certain guidelines AT&T has put in place.

So I called AT&T about getting my 3GS unlocked and of course they have a long list of requirements , one is if you are getting throttled down on the unlimited plan on your current phone when Ur phone is out of contract you can not get it unlocked but this doesn't apply my old 3GS as it not linked anymore.

I would think you should be able to sign up for a month (no contract, as you are bringing your own device), then ask AT&T to unlock it. Either that or perhaps a prepaid SIM card would work as well.

No, I would imagine Apple said if you don't do this, you will not get the next iPhone.

This would mean AT&T would cave in instantly, as it would be the death of the company at this point due to how they have mishandled everything so far, it would just be the final straw.

No, they will...or at least SAY they will. I called them, and await unlock codes (and INSTRUCTIONS!!!) for my old 3G and 3GS. All they asked for was the IMEI for each phone. I'm supposed to hear from them w/in 24-48 hrs, "w resolution by 4/17," whatever that means. They said they will even unlock a phone u're still using w them, but whose 2yr contract has been fulfilled.

We'll see. But I thnk this is pretty exciting.

I think for phone's that you got second hand there is a waiting period.

I just got off the phone with them right now and was able to tell them that I bought a phone from a friend. I got the phone swapped out at the apple store due to a defect, so they took note of my imei number and provided me a case number.

They told me that I should expect a code by April 17

Just called ATT about an exact same situation, and they gave me the exact same expectation date for the unlock code...
      So now, we wait!

I just called AT&T. They unlocked both my 4 and 4s

I think the key is to get to tier 2 tech support. No waiting. He literally took the IMEI of both phones, submitted them. I then put a t-mobile usa sim in and plugged into itunes. Once plugged in, iTunes updated the phone policy and are now unlocked. What a great day.

I unlocked 2 without restoring. Only sync with iTunes to apply the security policy to the seczone.

Anyone have success getting the online chat to get this done?

      -edit-

Went ahead and just called in. I didn't have to wait any more than 30 seconds after pressing 0 to talk to a rep. Since I wasn't an ATT customer, I could only get one iphone unlocked. So had my girlfriend's phone done.

All I was asked for was the IMEI number, and an email where I could be contacted at. The CSR didn't ask me for any other information like where the phone was purchased, or for any proof of purchase (my friend experienced otherwise).

Once I gave the IMEI number, she said everything checked out on her end, and that all I needed to do was wait for the email at the address I provided.

Did you have to wait for any kind of email before you could unlock, like everyone is being told?

I got two emails. One for each iPhone. The email isn't really significant though. Just the rep saying its submitted is all you need.

I know! I told the tech it was purchased free of obligations (contract is up in may). He did it anyway. Think he wanted to just be off the phone.
