  • Starting April 8th AT&T Will Finally Unlock Your iPhone For You

AT&T is listening to customers and providing them with a service they should have from the start?

I know I canít believe it either, but AT&T will now unlock your iPhone, the only catch? Your 2-year contract needs to be expired. The unlock will allow users to use their iPhone on any other carrierís network that is compatible with the device.

Beginning Sunday, April 8, we will offer qualifying customers the ability to unlock their AT&T iPhones. The only requirements are that a customerís account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee. ó AT&T
The new policy seems to be in response to an iPhone owner who contacted Tim Cook after AT&T refused to unlock his off-contract iPhone 3GS. The 3GS owner was moving to Canada and wanted to continue to use his phone after the move. AT&T eventually unlocked the device after being contacted directly by Cookís office (that had to be an awkward conversation).

While there are any number of hacks and unlock workarounds, this new policy offers the more patient among us to finally escape AT&Tís suffocating lack of service, customer care, and commitment to slow network expansion.

I proceed to test the speed in front of him. Less than 1 mile from an HSDPA+ tower in San Antonio Texas, I pulled 6.8 MBps, or less than 1/2 of the advertise 14.4Mbps, which is less than 1/4 of the un-lobbied 4G speed of 100Mbps. So, if by 4G they really mean 1/8th the speed of 4G, then ok, but I want an asterisk! He was happy when I left, so he could go play smart guy with soccer moms and old people.
Wow, you're so cool! Making an *** out of yourself in front of a packed store is AWESOME. You sound like a pretty big douchebag and I'm sure the entire store was happy that you left.

So i gave ATT a call and the first person i spoke with had nooo clue what i was talking about and gave me the official line that they dont unlock the iphone. After i told them they did starting today they transferred me to the tech support who didnt think i was a raving lunatic when i said i wanted it unlocked and instead seemed to know that they do in fact unlock them. But the process is kind of weird you have to request an unlock code and they will let me know in 48 hours. *sigh* i miss clicking unlock and its done iphonedev team FTW oh well at least the tech support guy was nice about it.

This is what I'm wondering as well. I don't need to unlock, but it certainly helps when selling an old device.

Calling a company out on blatant false advertising and product fraud makes me an ***? You like wearing skirts, huh? Bet you're really pretty with an apron on. Now go cook AT&T some dinner, woman.

Why would someone want AT&T to put on a screen protector? Idk, maybe because

      A. We're paying $20 for $0.75 worth of plastic film.

      B. We're the customer and we said so.

      C. We can always take our $200 a month somewhere else because not only are they not the only company with an iPhone, they're now just another company with the iPhone and the worst service.

That's why. Cause WE'RE the goddamn boss. Douche.

So has anyone gotten their iPhone unlocked though ATT yet? Is there a direct number to call instead of having them transfer you all over the place? I have 2 iPhone 4 (one is on untrasn0w, and the other is on a GEVEY sim) here that can use an unlock badly.

      Please share your success stories!

EDIT: Here's my log of my call to ATT:

      Call: 800-331-0500
      Press 1
      Press 0

      Ask about iPhone unlock program.
Will be ask for your ATT account phone number.
I stated I am overseas right now so I don't have one.
Asked me for the IMEI number
      Give IMEI number.
Put me on hold and listen to ATT commercials

Came back and ask where I got phone from. My answer: eBay
Asked if I knew what state the phone came from. My answer: I don't remember
He said this is to check if the original owner finished the contract and do not own money or paid the ETF.

I asked if my phone is qualify and he said the only thing they have to check is if the original owner has account in good standing, meaning if he either paid a ETF or finished the contract (with another phone). Doesn't even need to be a current ATT customer BUT have to not own ATT money.

Since I don't know who the original owner was, he said he will need to get a higher level tech to do the checking and send me the unlock.

Then I gave him my email and he gave me a case ID.

Guy said if the original owner is all good, there's no reason why my phone won't be unlocked.

Guy said the tech will contact me by email before April 16th.

Called ATT and couldn't unlock my iphone 4 or 4s because it is associated with an account still with contract... the iphone 4 came out in 06/24/2010.. I can't imagine anyone can have their iphone 4 or 4s unlocked by ATT at this time if you signed 2 year contact on of after that day... so why doesn't ATT just say right now realistically it's only for 3G or 3GS phones? That's TRICKERY!!!

You would be able to get it unlocked if you paid the ETF.

Well, I Called 3 Times.. The 1st 2 people i talked to were asshats saying i had a gophone and i needed a contract and i stated that it was a NON COMMITMENT phone yet they both after said i would need a reciept and etc. Then, i got the 3rd guy who picked up and asked for my number n i just told him i dont have one, im going out of the U.S. and i told him i have a non commitment phone, and not a subsidized etc. and that i knew how it would work and no need to explain, so he asked me for my phone number, email and IMEI.
was on hold for a lil bit...
After the hold he told me it was submitted and that it would take up to 24-48 hours for it to be unlocked.... and at most it would be done by next monday.... so lets seer what happens..

      thnx for the tut Ryo.

I called AT&T Premier and they sent me an email saying my phone (ip4) was eligible for unlock. said to backup and RESTORE through itunes and my phone would be unlocked. obviously i can only restore to 5.1 so i would loose my jailbreak. don't really need unlock now, so i'll just wait on a 5.1 jailbreak.

You shouldnt have to restore it. Just put a different carrier sim in and plug it in with iTunes open.

I called AT&T and the 1st rep told me she couldn't do it because they are not able to unlock it, Hung up and called again, 2nd Rep told me that it would be no problem, that all i would need is my IMEI and she will transfer me to Tech Support. Spoke with Tech Support and she asked for my IMEI and also asked if my contract was up, I told her that im now eligible for an upgrade and she was like Ok, Well your device is now ready to be unlocked, just plug it into iTunes and Restore it. I was like is that all, she said yeah you dont have to wait. She was right it was instant, except i didnt restore i just put in a T-Mobile Sim Card and plugged it into iTunes, What happens is the phone will put you back at the activation screen saying Activation Required, just run through all the steps and you will be back at the home screen. once thats done your all good and unlocked. I have an iPhone 4 if that Matters.

Followed these instructions but it was a little less invasive for my wife's 3GS. Called, gave them IMEI, they asked where I got it from and if I had ever had an AT&T account before. Maybe 5-10 minutes later I was told I would be getting an email within 72 hours of the results.

Now, my question is this: the 3GS in question currently has the iPad baseband (06.15.00), do I still have to use a custom IPSW through, let's say Sn0wbreeze, in order to preserve the baseband or could I just do a "real" restore with a non-custom IPSW?

Thats generally how those white unlocks work.. when i had my ip4 unlocked thru Negri Elec. a while back it 3 to 4 days for the email back so 2 days ain't bad..

You will always have to use custom firmware with that baseband.

I was fairly sure that I'd have to, but for some reason I felt implied to ask anyway!
