  • Walter Isaacson: Steve Jobs Really Did Hate Android

Remember when Steve Jobs said this?

    Originally Posted by Steve Jobs:

Walter Isaacson is the man behind Steve Jobs' biography. He has come forward to explain that Steve Jobs really did have a problem with Android, which is opposing the words recently spoken by Google co-founder and CEO Larry Page saying, "I think the Android differences were actually for show. I had a relationship with Steve."

Isaacson, having spent a ton of time with Jobs to compile the biography, came around to Steve's views on Android versus iOS on many accounts while with him. Isaacson illustrates Jobs' feelings about Android as he is quoted saying, "Google rips it off. It's almost copied verbatim by Android. And then they license it around promiscuously. And then Android starts surpassing Apple in market share, and this totally infuriated him. It wasn't a matter of money. He said: 'You can't pay me off, I'm here to destroy you'."

Citing MacRumors, Isaacson believes Tim Cook will take a different approach to handling the way Apple operates in co-existence with Android. Jobs was very closed minded when it came to competing products making sure people believed Apple was the best and there was no other practical choice, which is why it angered him so much when consumers flocked to Android and why Jobs always went on the offensive against Android. Isaacson believes Cook will instead try to "settle" all of these lawsuits between Apple and other manufacturers of Android smartphones rather than leave them on the full-blown offensive.

Becaus SJ never ripped off ideas of others (e.g., xerox)? I am sorry to say this, and it sounds horrible but if this is true "I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple's $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong. I'm going to destroy Android, because it's a stolen product. I'm willing to go thermonuclear war on this." Then GOOD RIDDANCE SJ.

Firstly, don't call him SJ. Second, Android blows. Anyone with a brain can see that. Steve had a brilliant mind, therefore he hated android.

"Good artists copy, great artists steal." Apple may have "stolen" the GUI and other ideas from Xerox, but you must realize an agreement was established where Apple could tour the facilities in exchange for Apple stocks. Granted, Jobs may have mislead and taken advantage of the fact that Xerox PARC had no idea of the implications of these features, but you cannot blame Jobs, given that he took the ideas and used his own innovation to make a great product.

Compare this to Android. Do you deny the multi-touch screen with exact gestures (swipe to open, pinch to zoom, etc.) were in any way innovations from the iPhone? If not, then it is a blatant imitation (at least in its infancy) of the Apple counterpart.

It's a shame you feel that way though. In my opinion, that statement from Jobs shouldn't surprise anyone who knew him or read his biography. It's also that type of passion for his work that led him to produce life-changing products (which I'm sure you reap the benefits of in some way or another). He was no doubt going to continue changing the world.

Why can't he call him SJ?
Anyway. SJ had a brilliant mind yes, but that's not why he hated Android.
He hated Android because it was one of the few serious competitors to Apple, and because he was a bitter man.

Jobs had a right to be angry toward Android. We have a Google CEO sitting on the board at Apple while Jobs and Co are perfecting iOS and the iPhone. Then on the side Google comes out with Android which is similar to iOS in many ways. The sad part is that Android has to put their OS on so many different phones to keep up with iOS and the iPhone, it's ridiculous! If they only put out one new phone a year with Android they would be no where near Apple! That right there should tell you who's got the better phone. So if I were Steve Jobs I'd be pretty mad too. Not to the point where I'd spend all my company's money and time trying to destroy Android, but I definitely would be suing for a few things.

Yeah no need to spend 40 billion. He is destroying it very slowly. I don't hate android but I've owned an 3G, 4, 4s iPhone and tried my moms Samsung galaxy for a day and I honestly was really happy to get my phone back.

Jobs didn't steal Xerox's technology, it was given to him. And look what he did with it all. He didn't sit beside Xerox and try to mimic what they were doing for the next decade. He built it into something fantastic, and much, much greater. This is no comparison to what Google is up to.

If he was serious in his intentions, I am happy he died when he did, as morbid as that sounds. Stifling competition is never a good thing. Seems to me iOS has borred more than a few things from Android (and the jailbreak team) as well.

Come on. Anyone saying they're HAPPY that he died is horrible.

Apple actually licensed the GUI/mouse technology from xerox. They could have gone the way of microsoft and just ripped xerox off, but technically they bought the rights and then turned it into the computing paradigm that sparked the information age.

Good for you by getting the quote right...just try getting your facts right next time junior.

Sj was a **** everyone knows he was a ****. just because he died doesn't make him a saint. and for everyone who says android sucks, you precious iPhone just added quite a few features in ios 5 that android had long before. iPhones are for simpletons. android take a little more effort in the brain dept. also google doesn't make phones so the release 1 phone a yr comment is stupid. google does it because it make a shitload of cash licensing out the os.

I understand your views but you must understand that being happy that someone dies when they've done nothing to harm you is simply disrespectful and inhumane.

EDIT: To be on topic I've gone "Droid" for awhile when I was forced to switch because my 4S was stolen I have to say it was an okay experience. Now that I got my iPhone back I totally forgot about my SGII Skyrocket. I just dislike Android and being on iOS just feels like home.

      cpotoso is completely right.
iOS is very limiting in its ways and android, being not as limited allows far more customization on an appearance and performance level. often the off the bat android can get quite boring. same with iPhone. but on iPhone you cant install a new launcher. you cant change your input method. you have the same old thing everyday. and once you begin to use android, see the freedom in ROM changing, keyboard customization, launcher customization, you will fall in love. i was an iPhone fanboy and i had a 3gs for 8 months and then a 4 for 9 months. i was getting my dad a smartphone and bought him the HD2 (which i put android on) while using it, i immediately fell in love and bought the lg g2x. and have loved it since (sept 2011) never bored. never better.

edit: gooseg dont be so rude everyone is entitled to their opinion.

If you hate the iPhone so much then why are you here then? Android is crap, I had one and I know. iPhone doesn't lag, freeze and the battery last the whole day. Try doing that with your Android. You should consider educating yourself and rethink about your life before posting.
