  • Apple Seeking Innovative Way to Charge Devices on Stores Shelves

It's no fun un-boxing your new iDevice only to find that it will soon require a full charge. Once we plunk down good money and unwrap the goodies in question, we want - if not expect - that bad boy to be fired up and ready to go for as long as possible.

As it turns out, Apple shares your desire. In fact, the iPhone maker has been tinkering with ways to possibly keep new iDevices fully charged while still on retail shelves. That much is clear from a new patent appropriately - and tellingly - titled "Active Electronic Media Packaging."

Discovered by our friends at Apple Insider, the freshly uncovered patent portrays a situation in which there is so-called "active packaging," meaning that the devices would be on display, showing off what they can do.

"Although typical packaging for an electronic media device may be designed to adequately protect the device from shock or damage, the packaging is extremely limited in other respects," the patent filing reads. "For example, the ability to fully view or interact with the electronic media device while still inside the packaging is severely limited in most packaging designs. Although unobtrusive packaging designs have been developed, these designs typically do not allow electronic media devices to be interacted with while inside the packaging."

Take a good look. This could be the future of iDevice displays at your nearest retailer very, very soon.

They could just ditch the box, have the device on display & charging, then pull out a sealed bag w/ the accessories once the sale is complete

Or have all the devices under an interactive, touchscreen 'glass' that keeps fingerprints off the device but allows someone to use it

It would be cool if they had a button or something on the outside of the box, so when you bought your device you just hit that button and the device would start charging in the box. That way it could charge on your way home or whatever, pretty much come with a small battery that could fully charge the device one time and could be activated without opening the box.

Ever since they sold Li-ion battery devices, all the ones I've purchased come with 50-70% charged out of the box. IIRC, that is the best way to store Li-ion and Li-poly batteries.

This is why they have demo devices. I really wouldn't want to buy any electronic device that has been on/used for days on end... Unless there's a discount... Like demo TV models.

Sounds pretty cool but they should somehow work w/ some solar power-hybrid battery ya think. Now that's cool and "green" I guess. Cool though.
