Having a phone is nice, but it’s terrible when you’re sleeping at night and you get that random text message or phone call when you forget to enable the mute switch. A new jailbreak tweak dubbed iSleepWell by iOS developer Xvolks brings us a way to keep the iPhone from ringing, or even vibrating for that matter while we are sleeping and the iPhone is sitting near us at night.
The tweak takes full advantage of the iPhone’s accelerometer to determine if the iPhone is face up or face down. When you place the iPhone face down, the iPhone will then enter Airplane Mode. This turns all of the iPhone’s radios off and therefore keeps all phone calls, text messages, and other internet-based notifications away while you are sleeping. You can technically use the tweak whenever you want to – not only when sleeping. iSleepWell comes with a preferences pane in the Settings application when you install it:

From the preferences pane, you have all these options:
- enable or disable the tweak on demand
- play a sound alerting you when iSleepWell activates and deactivates
- make the iPhone vibrate when iSleepWell activates and deactivates
- change orientation-check interval to:
- 5 seconds
- 10 seconds
- 15 seconds
- 30 seconds
- change sensitivity to:
- 0% (makes activating iSleepWell easy)
- 10-40%
- 50% (default)
- 60-80%
- 90% (makes activating iSleepWell hard)
- ability to activate iSleepWell when you place the iPhone face down
- ability to activate iSleepWell whenever the iPhone is in sleep mode
- ability to disable iSleepWell on manual Airplane Mode invoke
- ability to activate iSleepWell when you start charging the iDevice
- enable or disable syslog debugging
If you’re using an iPhone (iSleepWell works with the iPod touch as well, but has not been tested on iPad) then having the silent switch placed in the mute position means iSleepWell will not give you any sound alerts – only vibrate. If you have the silent switch on ring, then iSleepWell will literally say, “Airplane Mode,” or “Phone is now active.” The vibrate feature is not supported on the iPad or iPod touch, so it assumes voice alerts unless you disable them from the preferences pane.
If you bought iSleepWell before just a few hours ago, then you'll have noticed the recent version 1.1.1 update, which includes some new features. The enable while charging feature is new and a bug was fixed dealing with the sensitivity settings.
If you’re one of the many people around the world valuing your limited sleep hours every night, then you may want to check out iSleepWell for your iDevice. Not only will it prevent unwanted noise when you’re sleeping, however it can keep your phone quiet under office conditions or classroom conditions as well. The tweak seems to work great as far as our own testing with it went. I could definitely recommend it.
