  • [Review] Usefullcons - Add Some Useful Icons to the Home Screen

With most toggles and system events being hidden deep within the Settings application, jailbreaking gives us a way to make reaching those functions easy with personalized shortcuts. Whether you’re a Deck guy, an SBSettings guy, or some other kind of guy – there’s a toggle shortcut pane for you. A new toggle shortcut option available in Cydia today is a jailbreak tweak dubbed Usefullcons by iOS developer Rudolf Lichtner.

As illustrated by the screenshot above, Usefullcons adds toggle shortcut buttons to the home screen. Tapping on them will invoke their purpose. The iPhone has twelve of these toggle buttons and other iOS devices have less – this is because the iPod touch doesn’t support cellular data and doesn’t have an LED flash on the rear to activate the flashlight button that would show up on the iPhone. The developer automatically blocks incompatible buttons from showing on incompatible devices to help reduce clutter.

All of the buttons from an iPhone would give you the following options from the home screen:
    • play/pause iPod music
    • toggle flashlight
    • toggle rotation lock
    • invoke voice control
    • toggle Wi-Fi
    • toggle airplane mode
    • toggle location services
    • toggle cellular data
    • lock the device
    • respring the device
    • power down the device
    • reboot the device

When one of the toggles is on, the toggle icon turns blue and when the toggle is off the toggle icon is gray. A good idea for this tweak is since it puts all these icons on your home screen, to put them in a folder for better organization. Having all of these loose icons on your home screen can cause a great clutter issue making the tweak a hit or miss for some people.

Another great part about this tweak is the ability to choose which toggle buttons will be visible on your home screen. If you think you only might be using some of these home screen buttons frequently and not all of them, you can head over to the Settings application and check out the Usefullcons preferences pane. From there you will be able to turn on or off the toggles available on the home screen. When you make changes, you will need to run the ‘uicache’ command at the bottom of the preferences pane to save the changes:

What a waste, like I want to clutter my homescreen with more icons? This in Notification center for a reason with SBSettings

      ^^ @Bender
Not arguing, (ah yippee, I saved 3.4 seconds of my life today cause I had a quick jump icon from my springboard) but perhaps it may be a handy tweak for some. Don't hate, participate. Just sayin'

There is already a tweak in cydia that does this same thing. Forgot the name though

Hm. I feel the same way about this as I do about that double dock thing. It's taking up so much homescreen space. Maybe it's just me, I can't see much difference in this and SBSettings or IntelliscreenX. In fact, I use SBSettings primarily, it's accessible anywhere and is free. Ah well, to each his own.

I don't see this as very useful because you have to leave the app every time you want to hit one of the toggles. This is where sbsettings or intelliscreen have a clear advantage.

Deck however has the same problem.

^^^deck was updated so it opens in any app was it not?

And this doesn't seem useful... notification center is there for a reason... just more clutter on the home screen

^^No, it was updated to add some demanded features such as the ability to enter safe mode.

      This could definitely be useful.

I keep bluetooth off except when I jump in my car. Having to drag N. Centre down to enable bluetooth is a pain.

      I just bought it.

I was thinking the same thing, but saw no options for activating Bluetooth. Let us know how you get on with it.

Definitely it seems useful and handy for shortcuts but my problem is me also don't like to block my homescreen with any icons.

Ok, I assumed it had a bluetooth toggle, but it does not.

Just wasted my money. Plus this has HIDEOUS icons.

I wish Anicons would be updated for ios5.

To those who demand the Bluetooth Toggle, don't worry, it will be added in an Update very soon.

It has crashed my springboard multiple times and now I am left to only uninstall it...
