  • iPhone Bumps BlackBerry in RIM's Native Canada

There's nothing worse than losing on your home turf. Whether you're a sports team or a smartphone maker, accepting defeat at home is never easy. Don't believe me? Just ask the folks at Research in Motion. According to a new report published Thursday, the BlackBerry maker has been beat out by the iPhone in RIM's native land - Canada.

Canadians are flocking to the iPhone at a record pace. The result of the ongoing global exodus from BlackBerry has even struck home for RIM. Last year, for the first time since the iPhone was released in 2007, the BlackBerry wasn't the top selling smartphone in Canada. Top honors went to Apple and it's iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.

Bloomberg, culling data from IDC, says RIM shipped 2.08 million BlackBerrys in 2011 across Canada. Apple, on the other hand, shipped 2.85 million iPhones. In 2010, by comparison, BlackBerry sales topped the iPhone by nearly a half-million units.

“For RIM, in its home market, to lose that No. 1 position to iPhone is strategically important,” Paul Taylor, a fund manager at BMO Harris Private Banking in Toronto, tells Bloomberg. “It does identify, even with a home-country bias, how consumers are responding to the greater functionality of the iPhone.”

RIM will report fourth-quarter earnings on March 29th.

Why do people even use blackberry anymore. They're so dated compared to Windows, Android, and Apple

Yeah but do people really buy a product just because it's from their home country, even if it's worse than all its competitors? Nobody thinks that, I appreciate that most Americans are disgustingly patriotic, but that's too much even for them surely?!

Well, I am a first-time I phone user(gosh this phone is unbelievable) but I had blackberry phones in the past, what I cared about was the keyboard. The keyboard is still to me considered one of the best things that I love about that device. It's awesome. Hands down. I love the I phone also. And it depends on what you do and how you take care of biz via phone, everybody is different, conducts biz in a different way, etc..u say tomato... I say tomat0,... Eh, whatchagonna do? I do enjoy the I phone, but it's sad to say almost, I am used to texting on the I phone but I really miss the feel of buttons...
