New iPad Prompts Complaints of Weak Wi-Fi Reception

Consumers have had the new iPad for less than a week and already a number of complaints have bubbled to the top of the chatter boards of Apple Support Communities.

Following yesterday's report that the new iPad is, literally, a hot tablet - particularly during gameplay when the device can reach temperatures of 116 degrees - today we are hearing more about the supposed weak Wi-Fi reception that the third-gen tablet is experiencing.

A good number of users confess that the new iPad's WiFi reception capabilities - that is, the ability to grab a strong signal -is pitiful, especially when compared to the ability of the previous two generations of the device.

Among some of the comments posted on Apple Support Communities:

I am currently writing this from my ipad 1 because my new iPad RIGHT BESIDE ME doesn't pick up my wifi signal.

ipad2 has twice the wifi range with the same settings as the ipad3. The screens nice but I may return mine if this is the way they all are.

Will not hold WIFI for more than a few minutes. Two MacBooks and iPhone working fine from same router. Ready to return iPad!!!!!

We should point out, however, that a similar issue was reported shortly after the first iPad launched. Apple subsequently addressed and resolved the matter with a software update. So if the problem persists or proves to be widespread, Apple may be able to remedy this situation with a similar fix.

I bought an ASUS Transformer Prime last month and was having the exact same issue. After talking with an ASUS tech (who was actually very helpful surprisingly) and it turned out that the Prime had issues talking to wifi routers that were set to mixed mode instead of N only mode and worked best on channel 1 or channel 6. Luckily for me all my devices where N spec devices so I made the change and now my Prime gets fantastic reception and fast speeds. Though not a great fix as people may have a G spec device or something, but it could be something to look into for iPad 3 users.

Mine works absolutely amazing sand has no issues with receiving or maintaining a wifi signal. Got mine on day 1 and use it everyday.

My only complaint is it seems battery life gets sucked down pretty quick.

Any one else notice quick battery consumption???

This is an absolute joke. People really trying to knit pick at anything Apple releases. Hey let's not blame the cable provider or reset the router, let's just say its the iPad. Or It's probably Android fanboys or Androids market team writing these reviews hoping people will listen. My new iPad is not over heating and there is nothing wrong with the wifi connection

This is so funny. All that money Apple spends on R&D.....does anyone actually do a thorough test on these devices before they are launched?

Or do they pretty much just say....

"Well...it runs pretty hot and the WiFi is pretty weak compared to the previous devices, but the couple of new features should distract people long enough for us to get our stock and sales up. And then we'll downplay the issue and say it affects a small percentage of users and is most likely the WiFi network and not the iPad. Then we will blame it on the Sun. And if that doesn't work we'll just follow it up with an "update" which probably won't work which we will conveniently release shortly after the developers release their jailbreak for the new iPad."

Huh? Really, we can't get Wifi correct out of the box these days? This is something that is so basic to modern devices that they should be allowed to ship until it working 100% correct.

I have a new ipad and an ipad first gen. My 1st gen gets crapy reception when on the other side of my house or in my office at work. The new ipad gets great reception everywhere. I got a 32g 4G black ipad, orderedit the second day and had it by ten on Friday.

Can't believe people who don't own the new iPad believe this nonsense. I have full wifi bars right now and anywhere in my house. I have the 32gb wifi model.. No problems at all. No overheating problems at all. Yes I do love apple products, but can admit when there is a problem. My iPad 2 had light issues leaking from the screen. My AT&T iPhone 4 sucked.. Couldn't figure out if there was antenna issues or if AT&T just sucks maybe just both.. Didn't have that problem when I switched to Verizon. And now I have sprint with the 4S with no problems.

+1 Very well said. That's why I NEVER sit in some long *** line waiting for a new apple product. I wait until a later production week (you can tell by the serial) after I hear that the issues have been worked out. There are ALWAYS issues upon release with Apple products (but I'd rather have an Apple product than a droid).
