  • The New iPad iFixit Teardown Underway [Updating As Info Becomes Available]

There's quick, and then there's iFixit. Their Australian bretheren already have the new iPad, because well, they live in the future. This hemispherical advantage means the teardown of the new iPad is already underway.

So far iFixit's website is being blasted by traffic and periodically goes down. Just refresh until the page reappears if you're watching the live teardown. So far the only real information posted is confirmation of the new display connector and that the new retina display is indeed Samsung made.

Check out the live teardown here, or check back here for updates as they become available.

    *Update 1*

Looks like iFixit's servers are collapsing under the immense traffic. According to their Twitter account they're adding servers as fast they can to handle the traffic. We shall wait impatiently.*

    *Update 2*

Here's the A5X processor manufactured by Samsung in the first week of January 2012. Also, the Broadcam communications chip includes and FM transmitter and receiver. Didn't hear anything about that at the keynote.

    *Update 3*

Well the teardown is pretty much complete. Further dissection of the A5X processor shows little visible different between the A5 and the new processor aside from the X and a noted 0.2 GHz clock speed increase. The 16GB NAND flash memory is manufactured by Toshiba, no word on if the other models utilize Toshiba NAND chips as well.

The battery is of course huge. It looks like a camel-pack of portable energy. The new battery takes up the majority of space in the new iPad housing (like every tablet) and Apple has upped the power rating of the Li-ion battery from 25 watt-hours to 42.5 wat-hours. The huge jump is necessary to keep the new iPad's battery on par with the iPad 2 despite all the extra power sucked up by the new display.

Outside of that the usual camera pieces, and communications chips are found inside the new iPad, including Qualcomm's multiband LTE RF transceiver.

I welcome an FM transmitter (even tho most dont work that great) wonder how it can be used even tho it was never mentioned by Apple at the keynote. Strange.
