  • Apple Unleashes iOS 5.1

[WARNING: Jailbreakers should NOT upgrade to iOS 5.1 until a corresponding jailbreak is released)

In what amounted to the first formal announcement at Apple's media event today, Tim Cook revealed that iOS 5.1 (for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch) is now available for OTA download.

In addition to addressing bugs affecting battery life, the 189MB update delivers a number of significant tweaks and improvements. Most notably, there's voice dictation support for the iPad, an updated Camera app, and the ability to delete photos from Photo Stream.

All told, here's what iOS 5.1 delivers:

    - Japanese language support for Siri (availability may be limited during initial rollout)
    - Photos can now be deleted from Photo Stream
    - Camera shortcut now always visible on Lock Screen for iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch (4th generation)
    - Camera face detection now highlights all detected faces
    - Redesigned Camera app for iPad
    - Genius Mixes and Genius playlists for iTunes Match subscribers
    - Audio for TV programs and films on iPad optimized to sound louder and clearer
    - Podcast controls for playback speed and a 30-second rewind for iPad
    - Addresses bugs affecting battery life
    - Fixes and issue that occasionally caused audio to drop for outgoing calls

My battery never really had any problems. And I guess upgrading doesn't pertain to me since I'm not a "jailbreaksers" haha. Curious to see the new camera app though.

Does 5.0.1 still need to be signed in order to use the Absinthe jailbreak?

If you think you're connection is faster... then that's all in you're head, because you've been getting the same speeds the whole time. All that changed was the icon, from 3G to 4G.

      Hey guys,
Just updated my iP 4s to 5.1. I've noticed an increased battery life. Not very much.. but it's there!
For jailbreakers, don't worry, you're not missing that much.

You are free to install it, but that doesn't mean it work.

I know that the icon was just changed from 3G to 4G. But I'm serious, my Internet is slightly faster, and not just on the cellular network either. My friend has a 3GS, and he noticed a considerable performance increase through the cellular network. It's not as drastic on my 4S, but I still noticed it to be a little bit snappier. Everything loads faster now.

Can't wait for a jailbreak for this one if they have truly fixed the issue with the audio in outgoing calls....tired of calling people only to have to reboot my phone and call back because I can't hear the other person. Happens quite often....not annoying enough to give up my jailbreak though lol .

If you have the iPhone 4 they have a tethered jailbreak for it.

Long wait? 4.3 is jailbreakable, 4.3.1 is, 4.3.2 is, 5.0 is, 5.0.1 is. All iPad 2 firmwares are jailbroken.
Even 4.3.3 is after 5.0.x exploit?

Im sure jailbreak will be available sooner or later. I don't need jailbreak but im afraid od updating, the only thing I need jb is to install VLC (the vlc that was removed from apple store.)

Check recommended plist mods in earlier posting. I have not done it yet, but will post after I do. Connect to device and DL the plist and change it and then add back and reboot is what I plan.

This worked with iMovie, Numbers and Pages (or seems to so far) but NOT iPhoto (crashes at start as it attempts to update photo library). Used Xcode and PhoneDisk to copy, backup and then edit SystemVersion.plist. Then copy replaced original on IOS devices. 5.1 must make other general changes to Photos. Rate semi-success, but I mostly wanted iPhoto. Will have to wait for iPad 3, I guess.

Any genius tips on getting iPhoto to run?

On Respring error said System too new and not tested for Activator, but seems fine. Had to reinstall Infinidock on iPhone, but not iPad. I will post any other noted problems as encountered.

I did the same for my iPad cause I dont care about the jb for iPad 2 but yeah 97% last night and turned on all features and put it to sleep and didn't use it all night (12hours) and it was down to 18% when I woke up.
