  • Apple Unleashes iOS 5.1

[WARNING: Jailbreakers should NOT upgrade to iOS 5.1 until a corresponding jailbreak is released)

In what amounted to the first formal announcement at Apple's media event today, Tim Cook revealed that iOS 5.1 (for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch) is now available for OTA download.

In addition to addressing bugs affecting battery life, the 189MB update delivers a number of significant tweaks and improvements. Most notably, there's voice dictation support for the iPad, an updated Camera app, and the ability to delete photos from Photo Stream.

All told, here's what iOS 5.1 delivers:

    - Japanese language support for Siri (availability may be limited during initial rollout)
    - Photos can now be deleted from Photo Stream
    - Camera shortcut now always visible on Lock Screen for iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch (4th generation)
    - Camera face detection now highlights all detected faces
    - Redesigned Camera app for iPad
    - Genius Mixes and Genius playlists for iTunes Match subscribers
    - Audio for TV programs and films on iPad optimized to sound louder and clearer
    - Podcast controls for playback speed and a 30-second rewind for iPad
    - Addresses bugs affecting battery life
    - Fixes and issue that occasionally caused audio to drop for outgoing calls

No understand that's with all iCloud features and Siri. (if she makes a difference). And right now I have all those features off. Siri off and brightness down to 50%. And I will take it off the charger at 6:30am and will use it on my 1 break which is 15 minutes and then my lunch break which is an hour and a little on the drive home just web browsing modmyi app and Ifile and checking cydia and I'll have 40-50% left so for 10 full hours of work and only an hour and a half use. I'll lose that much.

Do you have a lot of apps running in multitask? I take my 4S off the charger at 4:30 am and I've used it all day and I'm at 49% right now. I've noticed if I have a lot of apps (especially games) in multitask my battery will drain faster.

Nope with me being OCD I have wekill background tweak and always clear my multitask switcher. I think I'm just the unlucky ones with the battery issue. It sucks hearing Tim cook talk about iCloud and all the cool features and I can't have any of that lol

Well I have noticed my itouch 4G losing a bit more battery than usual, and it has gotten slightly sluggish (too many addons and stuff I'm assuming). I might just upgrade.

Definitely not worth updating. Except for those who may still have battery issues. But who knows if this update will ACTUALLY fix the battery for good

Only useful part really is the battery life fixes...IF they are actually effective.

      HELP HELP HELP!
Is ther anyway to MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE idevices or iTunes doesn't download the update, and update automatically ?

I need to disable it as my jailbreaks for iPad and iPhone are for the simple fact that I need the tethering for wifi service in school.
I cannot accidentally update, or have it update when I sync to iTunes.

      Please help!

Successfully updated three hours ago and I'm happy to say that the batter issue has been 100% wiped from my iPhone 4S!

      System>Library>Coreservices>SystemVersion.plist

Then change the version in the .plist from 5.0.1 to 5.1

Then you are free to install iPhoto

My iPod battery is suffering a little but Im pretty sure it's because the battery is getting old. But iOS 5 probably still plays a little part.

iPhoto needs the iPhone or iPad, and does not run on the iPod touch - can someone come out with a 5.1 jailbreak, and a tweak that lets iPhoto run on the iPod touch?
