  • iOS 4.2 Reduces Power Output to iPad Camera Connection Kit

iPad owners who recently upgraded to iOS 4.2 are in for a shock if they use the iPad Camera Connection Kit with certain cameras. With the iOS 4.2 update, Apple has lowered the power output of the iPad’s 30-pin connector to a mere 20mA, down from 100mA in iOS 3.2. This means that some cameras and other peripherals that use the 30-pin connector, will not function if they try to draw too much power from the iPad. If you do attempt to use a power-hungry device you will get the following message: “The connected USB device requires too much power.”

The new power specification is most likely a new feature designed to improve battery life on the iPad. This is little comfort to iPad owners, however, as some users rely on their devices on a daily basis. Hopefully, this is just a bug that will be addressed in the next iOS update, rumored to be coming later this month. Currently, even Apple’s own USB keyboard does not function under iOS 4.2. Other affected devices include USB flash drives and USB powered microphones. Self-powered devices, however, remain unaffected.

The ability to upload pictures on the go, is one of the iPad’s nicer features. For now, photographers who want to upload pictures directly to their iPad, should wait and see if their equipment is compatible with the latest iOS update. Unfortunately, downgrading to pervious iOS versions is something Apple frowns upon, so some users may end up being stuck until this problem is resolved.

Aside from the fact that 4.2 is not allowing the ipad to obtain enough power to juice up a camera connection...

i do think it's hilarious that they use the GAP logo!

Anyone know if this is affecting the guitar hookup kit? I forgot what it's called, but it's been featured on MMi before.

It makes more sense really. You just need the sd card to save your images. More (battery) power to the people!

I remember reading a thread a member posted saying that his iPad will not read his memory stick after installing 4.2.1 and this is why, sounds like a bug though

The only "fix" until a tweak comes out is to use a powered USB hub. Plug that into the connector, plug the hub into the wall and you can run your USB devices from that.

Actually there are some unpowered hubs that will also work. Here are two that I know work for sure:
