  • Rumor: Second Generation iPad Gets Exclusive Camera Lens Supplier

Apple certainly loves exclusive deals. Such may once again be the case if a new report out this morning from DigiTimes proves correct. According to information gathered by the publication, a Taiwan-based firm has been tapped to be the exclusive provider of camera lens modules for the iPad 2, which may be ready for mass-market roll out as early as March 2011.

Largan Precision - the supposed camera lens provider in question - isn't dishing many details for now. Largan, however, is believed to be the supplier of the 5-megapixel lens modules for the iPhone 4. While some are assuming that the same camera lens module from the latest iPhone will similarly find a home on the second generation iPad, there is no concrete evidence to suggest how many megapixels the rumored iPad camera will sport.

As widely expected by industry analysts, the iPad 2 will heavily concentrate upon social networking attributes, most significantly, with the arrival of FaceTime and a corresponding front facing camera (not to mention a rear facing camera for photos and improved gameplay). The emergence of FaceTime last summer on the iPhone 4 has continued to drive mega sales of the revolutionary Apple smartphone. Since Apple appears more than pleased with Largan Precision's suspected work on iPhone 4, many are taking heed of the first-ever report to name the same organization as a possible sole supplier of the camera lens component required by the next generation iPad.

So my current question for everyone is:

When is the best time to sell your current iPad to maximize initial investment recoup, without waiting to long before everyone else finds out about the 2nd iPad and doesn't want mine anymore?

I feel this is an earth shatteringly important question.

You have to sell it before the media event in January (where they will preview the next iPad)

Before christmas would be your best bet

I will prolly get the iPad 2G, especially if it has some new features, camera, better screen, more memory, faster processor. Although my 32GB wifi only ipad can handle just about anything as it hardly gets bogged down. And now that Cydia is in landscape, my ipad is happy.

There won't be another early preview of the iPad. That was a one time only deal to ensure developers were ready with new apps. Just like with the iPhone, the only early previews will be for iOS, but not for any specific new hardware.

Figure to sell your iPad before christmas. Make it a cheaper christmas present for someone who doesn't want to pay full price.

Figure 16gb wifi for like $400 used, then increase from there.

That way you have all of that towards a brand new iPad which will probably release in March-April. Considering Apple likes to refresh their lines every year or so, that would be an appropriate guess to the release.

I don't care about the camera. I understand why they are and it was pretty much a given that it was going to have one. I still haven't used FaceTime yet

I want to know more about speed, screen, memory and the other tidbits. Pricing and if there would be a Verizon iPad 3G without the mifi and if they have buy as you go plan, that would be nice. Figure I'd have dual coverage with my iphone4 and MyWi and if I'm some place AT&T doesn't cut it, call up and put some data and my pay as you go acct. Yes i know, dreaming

Exactly. It is a bit unfortunate that this is going to happen. The current iPad is great. It's almost like jobs is making the company roll out model after model and letting all of the older models out in the cold with 18 months... Kind of sad to see

"What? They are adding a camera? Two in fact? Why on earth would you need even one?!?!"

      - what 1st gen iPad users are ALL saying (based on how they were all justifying how a camera would be a waste).

Well when you get a huge chunk of people buying the next generation every year, don't you think it's worth it for them to do? Hell, if I can get a 1st gen ipad for around $150 I would actually buy one. Not at current prices though.
