Adobe Photoshop is a powerful image manipulation application. It’s obtainable for the Mac, but iOS only has a miniature express Photoshop application with extremely inadequate functionality compared to the Creative Suite version that we can get on our personal computers. Monday, Adobe is releasing Adobe Photoshop Touch, which will be compatible with the iPad 2 running iOS 5. Citing 9to5Mac, the application is already live in the AU and NZ App Stores and will soon be live in the US App Store from this link.
According to Adobe’s Web Site, Photoshop Touch for the iPad 2 will have support for a paid service dubbed Creative Cloud, which is similar to iCloud with Adobe’s name stamped on it. Creative Cloud permits you to sync your Photoshop projects between machines – that includes between your iPad and Mac or other personal computer. The Photoshop Touch application will set you back $9.99 to reserve your copy when it is live.
Photoshop Touch will support layering, simple selection tools, and some essential image editing tools; much more than was made available in the free Adobe Photoshop Express application for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, which only supported things like hue, photograph filters, and general photograph editing that iOS 5 already comes loaded with. We don't know if Adobe plans to make Photoshop Touch available for other iOS devices in the future, but we certainly hope they consider it.
While we expect that the iPad will never feel the same as using Photoshop on a personal computer, this is a great step forward for photo editing on iOS. For $9.99, we should expect some great functionality above numerous copycats that have tried to reproduce Adobe’s image on Apple’s mobile devices. I look forward to finally being able to play with layered editing on iOS with a name that I trust (Adobe).
UPDATE: The release to the AU and NZ App Stores was by accident and has been pulled from the App Store. The Photoshop Touch application will be released on Monday.
