Adele First Artist to Go Double Platinum on iTunes
Adele can add another achievement to her six Grammies and 21 weeks at the top of the Billboard 100: She’s the first artist to go double-platinum on iTunes.
Columbia Records announced the accomplishment yesterday in a press release, along with a ton of other Adele related factoids. Adele’s album “21” is the longest running #1 album by any woman in Billboard history with 21 non-consecutive weeks at the top of the charts.
Adele’s 21 also saw the largest post-Grammy sales surge in history and the largest week-to-week sales jump in history not counting abnormal release practices, selling 730,000 copies the week after record-setting night at the Grammies. Adele has sold 18 million copies worldwide and 7 million copies in the U.S. Adele sold two million digital copies in the same year through iTunes. Not even The Beatles could do that.
Adele’s strong sales mirror a record-setting year and fourth quarter for iTunes. During Apple’s 4Q iTunes recorded revenue of $1.7 billion likely in part to the introduction of iTunes to many Latin American countries including Brazil.
