iPegs is a new game available in the Cydia store by iOS developer Jake Schultz. The point of the game is to make the ball you drop from the top of the screen hit the green "next " goal in each level. As you progress through all of the 45 levels, the game play gets harder with more advanced barricade types. Jake has also informed us in the Cydia description that he plans to add more levels as a free update in the near future. What’s more is that this Cydia version is a pre-release of the game, which will be submitted to the Apple App Store in about two weeks.
iPegs requires patience, skill, and luck. It’s not a difficult game, however it can make you think. Physics are heavily involved in the gameplay, which make the ball move around – the gravity in the game is completely artificial and you cannot shake the device to move a stuck ball around using the accelerometer. If a ball gets stuck, you can try dropping more balls on it to dislodge it.
As aforementioned, there are different barricades in iPegs. The barricades consist of colored pegs and gray walls. The gray walls will simply barricade you from being able to get past it. The color of the peg exposes its capabilities:
- Gray - the standard peg that blocks your way.
- Blue - this peg has 4x bounce when the ball hits it and blocks your way.
- Green - this peg blocks your way and has 2x friction to reduce bounce.
- Red - this peg destroys the ball when touched.
- Purple - this peg is destroyed when the ball touches it.
- Yellow - this peg is launched in the opposite direction that it is struck by the ball and will activate the green goal if it touches the goal.
- Brown - this peg is like mud and suck the ball in and make it move super slowly.
As you are playing, you will also notice a number counter as your balls exit the screen. This counter lets you know how many balls you have lost and the object of the game is to keep that counter as low as possible at the end of each level. As you progress through the levels of the game, the background will also change to different images.
Coming in the future with the new levels are even more cool things: background audio music to make it kinder to the ears, better graphics to substitute the current simpler ones, and Game Center support when it is live in the App Store. When playing the game myself, I was discouraged to find out that once you quit the application and then re-enter it, you have to start over. Jake says that he is working on a menu system to be able to play from where you left off and the only thing left to do now is remove the bugs from it before he releases it. The game play is pretty fun to be honest. I am looking forward to the better graphics, however.
