  • Financial Times to Pay for Employees' iPads

The CEO of the Financial Times newspaper told his 1,800 employees in a memo Thursday he will give anyone who buys an iPad or other tablet a reimbursement of £300 (about $480 US). In the memo, CEO John Ridding said the company was "making this investment because digital channels and tablet devices are becoming increasingly important for us."

The FT's iPad app has 40,000 registered users, which represent 10 percent of the paper's digital subscriptions, and has made £1 million from sales of in-app advertisements since it was launched in May. The strategy in trying to get its own employees hooked on iPads seems to be both a way to get more feedback on the app as well as publicly showing the FT's enthusiasm about the iPad. It will cost the company £540,000 or $864,000 if every employee cashes in.

The memo that FT Group CEO John Ridding wrote to his staff began "Iím pleased to let you know that we are launching today a new initiative that will allow FT staff to claim a £300 (Ä350/ US$480) subsidy for the purchase of a personal iPad or tablet," and went on to say that "given [tablets'] importance and the wave of innovation that we are seeing in applications and services, we want to encourage all our staff to be expert and experienced in using them." Ridding says the staff all owning iPads will allow the FT "to fully understand their potential and share the user experience to better understand our customers and the developments and innovations taking place in the market."

Ridding also promised "a series of masterclasses and workshops to help staff get the most from their devices and the applications that are currently available."

So... If they go to TJMax to buy their iPad (see other news article for today), they can own an iPad and make a few bucks?
