  • Apple Addresses Proview iPad Trademark Lawsuit

Late last night Apple addressed efforts by the Chinese company Proview to take Apple’s iPad off shelves in the country because of Proview’s claim to the trademark on the term iPad in China.

“We bought Proview’s worldwide rights to the iPad trademark in 10 different countries several years ago. Proview refuses to honor their agreement with Apple, and a Hong Kong court has sided with Apple in this matter,” according to the statement, which also said the case is still pending on the Chinese mainland.” — Apple
According to Apple they purchased Proview’s iPad trademark years ago in 10 different countries. Proview refuses to transfer the trademark even though Hong Kong courts have sided with Apple already in the case. Mainland China is a different story however, and courts there are notorious for siding with Chinese companies in issues like this. Still, Proview's attempts to block shipments of the iPad from coming or going out of China proved futile earlier this week

While the shipment and sale of iPads will likely remain unaffected, the mainland Chinese courts could side with Proview and require Apple to pay a sum less than the $1.5 billion that Proview wants for the name. Or Apple could change the name of the iPad in China.

    Oh the possibilities.
