  • New Cydia Application Allows Siri On Older iDevices - No Proxy Needed

Two newfangled applications have surfaced in the Cydia store today that permit you to link an iDevice deprived of Siri to an iPhone 4S to use Siri on that older iDevice. The big catch is that you need a jailbroken iPhone 4S, whether it is yours or not. The proxy server method does not necessitate an iPhone 4S because only the owner of the proxy server needs the iPhone 4S keys. In most cases, we buy the use of these servers so that we do not need to go out and buy an iPhone 4S. For that, Modmyi has produced a list of reputable Siri servers that you can use with the popular Siri port dubbed Spire by iOS hacker and developer Grant Paul.

The two new applications are called AssistantConnect and AssistantConnect4S. As the names advocate, one should be installed on the iPhone 4S and the other one should be installed on the older iDevice that you want Siri on. To use this method of getting Siri on your older, jailbroken iOS 5 device, you will need to have Spire installed on it. For the rest of the ride after installing Spire, you will be using this new application, which is made by an iOS developer by the name of Bilal S. Sayed Ahmad.

Subsequent to installing AssistantConnect from Cydia on both the iPhone 4S and the older iDevice (free from the BigBoss repository), you should reboot both iDevices. Afterwards, you will find a new icon on your home screen, which is indicated by the screenshot above. This is the application where you will send the iPhone 4S information over to your older iDevice. You can open that application up and you will find the interface, shown below. The top half of the screenshot is what the application will look like on the older iDevice and the bottom half is what you will see on the iPhone 4S.

The steps for making Siri fully functional on your older iDevice with AssistantConnect and AssistantConnect4S are outlined in five steps by the developer in the Cydia description of AssistantConnect4S:

    1. After installation, open AssistantConnect4S and reboot the iPhone 4S.
    2. After you reboot the iPhone 4S, open AssistantConnect4S again and invoke Siri (hold down the home button for a few seconds) and say something – anything you want to say.
    3. Tap the, “Email Siri Data” button and email it to any of your older iDevices that have AssistantConnect installed on them.
    4. Go over to your older iDevice (which should have not only AssistantConnect installed on it, but also Spire) and open the file that is emailed to you from the iPhone 4S.
    5. Enjoy Siri.

The developer goes a step further to forewarn us that we should not share our iPhone 4S Siri information with more than five people at once. The developer also promises that the connection is secure.

Just to be clear. The phones do not have to stay close to each other correct?

Still no go .. Siri just keeps saying there is a problem.. I've re-installed spire and all that.. makes me wonder if the fact I was using a real proxy at one time has left some kind of stray config somewhere that is messing me up.

Siri doesn't even let me speak, as soon as it prompts it immediately stops and says there is a problem.. at least she apologizes lol

Edit: Well that got siri running, but she says "I'm sorry about this but I can't take any requests right now"
You Can Install Siri on iPad 2 with Spire

This is how I pulled it off. Works reasonably well but noticably glitchy. Only works in the portrait orientation, doesn't support addons, asking about weather causes a respring and theres no dictation button on the keyboard. Oh, and cos this way of getting Siri involves plist editing, I am taking no responsibilities for any of you mugs screwing your iPad up. :P

Yes, the 4S owner needs to send out an email daily. It tells you the expiry time on both devices so it's all good. What I'd like to see in the future is a way of setting email addresses to automate the sending every 24 hours. Though that relies on when you last used Siri as it uses those most recent keys.

I'd still love to get it running on my iPod 4 .. it's not working at ALL .. but I won't be upset if I don't .. it's a novelty to me since I have my 4s with me at all times anyway..

I just wish I knew what the problem was, I hate mysteries.. I just don't want to restore to try that avenue

You said you've already re-installed Spire, have you tried entering different information into the Proxy field? "http://" may just be causing Siri to get confused. I choose "127.0.0.1" as it's a universal network mirror to just bounce all data back to the device that sent it. It seemed the most logical thing to do seeing as the auth-tokens do all the work.

To get everything working you have to disable SpireInjector and SpireHooks in SBsettings. Try that and everything should work.

When I try http:// siri pops up but the button doesn't do anything at all .. when I try http://127.0.01 it gives me the errors as if Siri can't connect to the server.

I removed the dependency on "Spire" from the 1.0.0 deb and installed it on my iPad (which has Spire for iPad, uses a different bundle than com.chpwn.spire, therefore the conflict), but no icon appeared and therefore I couldn't load the AssistantConnect4S data. Any other suggestions?

After trying everything this suggestion actually worked perfectly

And SiriToggles even works. Wow this is nice having Siri and not having a 4S!
