  • Samsung's Super Bowl Ad Takes Another Jab at Apple

Samsung’s much anticipated anti-Apple campaign ad aired during a break in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl XLVI just earlier today. The 90-second spot, which was set to the British band, The Darkness’ 2003 hit “I Believe in a Thing Called Love,” depicted Apple users being tired of waiting for “the next best thing” and decided to convert to the new Samsung product. According to an estimate provided by the financial blog 24/7 Wall St, the ad estimated out to cost roughly $10.5 million in airtime alone and included cameos from The Darkness lead singer Justin Hawkins and Chicago Bears’ standout linebacker Brian Urlacher.

For those of you haven’t seen the advertisement, you can see it below:

    Youtube Video

The ad begins with the typical hipsters waiting in line for what is assumed to be the launch of the new iOS device. They complain about how long they’ve been waiting when one of them spots a Galaxy Note and ends up asking “what is that?!” From there, things take a new and surprising twist (compared to older advertisements) and soon everyone is using the Galaxy Note to make movies, take pictures, and even grab an autograph from Urlacher. There was also an appearance by the “barista” character from previous ads in the campaign, who ends up saying “well that was over the top,” at the end of the commercial.

It was a bit of a surprise to see Samsung switching their advertisement from the Galaxy S II to the Galaxy Note but it seems to make sense for them to be advertising that. The Note is Samsung’s new device which is larger than a phone but not quite the size of a tablet, sporting a 5.3 inch screen, a 1280x800 pixel screen, a 1.5 GHz dual core processor, 16 GB of internal memory, an SD card reader, and 4G-connectivity.

The device is Samsung’s answer to set itself apart from Apple’s handset and tablet offerings. It utilizes the stylus as its main form of input instead of the finger-based scheme which was made popular by the original iPhone. In today’s commercial, the capacitive “pen” is quite heavily reference and seems to be a throwback to the older PDA market. AT&T is set to begin sales of the Note on February 19th and will be offering the Android device for $299 on a two-year contract.

We’d like to hear your opinion of the commercial below! Do you think that Samsung’s Galaxy Note will be a competitor to any of Apple’s iOS devices? Share any thoughts and opinions below!

Doubtful that it will even come close to competing with Apple phones. There are already to many Galaxy phones out for that one phone to be competitive.

I do however think the Galaxy S3 will be a legitimate competitor to even the new iPhone 5/6 (whatever it's called)......but the Note just doesn't offer anything more than a bigger over-sized screen with a higher resolution and a stylus. Hardly enough to get the masses to switch as many will probably consider a 5.3" screen to be to big for a phone.

The Galaxy 1 is better than the iPhone 4. The Galaxy 2 kicks *** over the 4S.
There will be no doubt the Galaxy 3 will kick *** over anything Apple will bring out.
When will Apple learn that we want the phone the way WE want it as its OUR phone NOT theirs.
I doubt Apple are that smart so I will be looking forward to the Galaxy 3 as that will be an awesome phone.

Everyone in the room was laughing at the "Is that a pen?" part when it came on. Not like everyone there was tech-savvy.

A 5.3 inch phone?A stylus? Really? That's what they spent $10 million dollars on? You've got to be kidding me. Why don't we just make the Samsung 10.1 tablets a phone? Sorry I don't care how great the resolution is.. 5.3 is way to big to carry around for a phone and way to small for a tablet. What a joke

      "IT HAS A PEN?!"

Ohh it's a feature... weird cuz I rather not have a pen.

BTW I love that the biggest "innovation" on most android products are bigger screen sizes and more cores... I see they are aiming at the crowd that likes to overcompensate.

I think is stupid to use a LCDTV or Tablet as a phone, pens on touch screen devices are so stupid, it's like touching your woman with a dildo... I guess :$

Whether or not one is better than the other is to a degree subjective but do you not actually license, (as opposed to own), the software on the phone(s)? The phone may be yours, iOS and Android are not and probably never will be. An important distinction.

I agree 5.3" is way too big for a phone. However I do wish the stylus would make a come back but only for tablets.

Everytime you post a sammy video you neglect to make the YouTube link viewable to iOS users. Some of us are at work and can't see it other than on our devices;/

See this is what I can never get my head around. For me it would kill me to be on Android because every 6 months there's a new iPhone killer on the market, a new flagship Droid phone. There is no consistency with it. I guess I prefer to have something that runs near perfectly but can be jailbroken for my needs.

Also, at the moment, the iphone is still a smartphone rather than being a mini-tablet. Something else that irks me about the way Droid phones are heading.

Conclusion? Each to their own. The fact they have to make an ad having a joke and a poke at Apple pretty much sums it up, IMO.

Fairy is a very apt name for you, maybe fairyid**t would have rounded it off better.

I left apple after the 3G and bought nearly every flagship android device after that right up to the SGS2. The SGS2 is a pile of garbage, the screens have lots of problems with piss yellow calibrations and I went through 5 until I got one with a normal screen. I wished I had never left apple for two years as all I had was grief with unstable roms and real 3rd rate apps. Upon release of the 4s and iOS 5 I knew it was time to return, and I have been buzzing ever since. And now with iCloud and iTunes mate it really does rule. I hope android can respond as competition breeds innovation, but apple have well and truly taken a big leap ahead. Also ICS is a regression and definitely not a progression for android smartphones, it only looks and feels good on tablets really.

I agree, a stylus on a phone is kinda retarded. It's just another thing to lose.

My biggest issue is that Samsung thinks that it will earn points for it's blatant Apple bashing. I've actually LOST a lot of faith in the company since all they're doing right now is running an Apple smear campaign.
(Unlike Chevy, who's doing it right with a light ribbing)

Regardless of the products involved, as an advert that was TERRIBLE! It was like a spoof advert you'd see in the Simpsons: "it has a pen?!" Who'd be amazed by that?

It also showed pretty much no features the phone actually had, except the ones already on an iPhone. Why not show the UNIQUE features? Why were people getting so excited about that phone?

Also, I've never been to a big line up like that, but I'm guessing people are actually pretty excited to be getting their hands on what is - to them anyway - the best thing since sliced bread.
