  • iOS 4.2 Goes for the Gold

Apple, today released iOS 4.2 Golden Master to developers. Apple appears to be on track for its scheduled November release. There is said to be 100+ new features and innovations included with this update. Now that the GM has been released to developers it shouldn’t be too long before it’s made available to the public.

With this release, Apple will finally bring the iPad up-to-date with the iPhone and iPod Touch. This software will be a unification of sorts. No longer will people have to keep track of the most current software version for the iPad and iPhone. iOS will finally have one unified version of the software that runs on all devices. This will be a welcome relief for iPad users everywhere. New to the iPad will be such features as multitasking, folders, a unified mailbox, Game Center support and many other enhancements as well.

iOS 4.2 brings a host of welcomed improvements, but one change is causing some controversy. The screen lock rotation switch has now been repurposed to act as the mute button. Some users are not happy about the change, but it is in keeping with Apple’s theme to unify the iOS on all devices.

With the iPad’s additional screen real estate, the multitasking bar has been expanded to include more features. It operates just as you would expect it to, but now includes screen lock, brightness control, iPod functions and Volume setting. To the left of the volume slider is the new AirPlay button. I look forward to seeing this button appear on the iPhone as well.

AirPlay is arguably the most anticipated new feature coming to this iOS update. AirPlay allows you to stream music, video and photos directly from your iOS device to an Apple TV. Some apps will be compatible with AirPlay as well, allowing you to stream content from an app on your iOS device to an Apple TV. Apps may one day become a replacement for traditional TV channels. This would make the Apple TV a real contender to replace regular cable service. Apple is sure to open an Apple TV App Store, “when the time is right” according to Steve Jobs.

AirPrint is another welcome addition to the iOS. Now, people will finally be able to print mail, photos and even web pages directly to a Wi-Fi connected printer.

Today, Apple also invited developers to submit their apps for iOS 4.2 review. This is great news for the average user. It is an indication that there should be a good supply of compatible apps as soon as the update is released. Hopefully, this version of the iOS will be less problematic for developers to jailbreak than in previous versions. With such an array of new features, this update will be hard to resist.

      THANKS!

But I see a few obvious bits are still missing

      PHP Code:
      CoreLocation
      CLLocation
      .h
      -[CLLocation
      makeWiFiActuallyWorkAgain
      :skyhook:userContributedAPs:placesOtherThanCupertino:]
      -[
      CLLocation
      GyroCompass
      :forCryinOutLoud:GyroShouldBeGoodEnoughToFakeMagCompassWithSuitableCalibration:WouldntBePerfect:butWhatIs:]
      Hrm.
Considering the chances Apple will ever support #2,
I think a MobileSubstrate hack that implemented a GyroCompass would be awful nifty.
      I think I'm gonna try writing a (user-mode) Compass as proof-of-concept. :/

      OK.
How about a "mute switch" for Steve Jobs, when he adds 'new features' to IOS that remove old features we actually found useful?

I love the rotation inhibitor as well. It' essential for browsing the iPhone while laying down. I agree with a lot of you. I may lose more features than gain. Hopefully the Devs will have a few patches in the works. It may take a while though. This may be the first time that I don't upgrade.

Did anyone test the airprint? My lexmark Pro200 series does not have wifi printing at all other than the lexprint app which only prints photos at this stage.

I'm really looking forward to os4.2 and i hope it prints to lexmark printers as well

      anyone tested this?

The first gen AppleTV does not run iOS... so no.

As seen on the first post... it's going to be just like the screen lock on all other devices with iOS 4. You double click the home button.. swipe to the right and click the rotation lock button.

I don't even have a printer atm! Anyone know of a good printer that will be compatible with airprint? I think I'll probably go for a HP :-)

Ahh, from what I've read AirPlay is only going to be streaming audio not video? Can someone confirm this?

Seems like a nice update for iPad, but for iPhone or iPod Touch doesn't seem to offer that much. Are there really people needing Airprint? Airplay is cool but you need an Apple TV 2nd generation (how many have that) and if it isn't streaming video that is a big bummer.

My iPhone 4 will wait til there is new jailbreak which won't be too long

Look for an HP printer that supports eprinting. Unfortunately the list of printers that can be used on 4.2 is pretty short. There is probably a list on Apple's site.

I tried Jailbreaking my iTouch 4g on 4.2 with Redsnow, but Cydia crashes instantly when I launch it. Is anyone else having this issue?

Cydia has not been updated to work with 4.2 yet. It will not be updated until it is packaged with a new/official 4.2 jailbreak tool.

Sure hope Cydia 4.2 is better than the trash dookie I have now.....

How bout a user id for transferring purchases? And a backup system? Idk, maybe a tool that reflects the millions that have been made from it? Ie; doesn't look and act like broken crapware from 1998.

Changing the screen lock button to a mute button is just plain stupid! Will there still be screen lock button anywhere?
