  • [Review] WeeKillBackground Pro - Kill Backgrounded Apps Instantly

Are tons of backgrounded applications annoying you?

If you're a perfectionist that hates when you have several applications running in the background when you put your iPhone or iPod touch to sleep or turn it off, then you will probably like this tweak. It's called WeeKillBackground Pro for NotificationCenter by the same developer that brought us ProTube, Jonas Gessner. It is just what you're looking for if you want a nice and easy way to kill all applications from the background in one tap.

As you can see from the image above, a new Notification Center widget is added to your Notification Center. Normally, it has the text, "Tap to close all Apps" inside of it, but as you will find from the extensive settings, you can actually change that text to anything that you would like it to say. The settings are so extensive, that we're just going to jump right into them. Here is a screenshot of the entire settings panel for WeeKillBackground Pro:

Going in order, you will see the option to exclude apps. If you are wondering what this does, it means that WeeKillBackground Pro will kill all applications running in the background except for the ones that you select. This means that you can close out of the memory-hog applications but continue to let applications that you need run in the background. After that, you see the options for changing around the text that appears in your Notification Center widget. You can change the text color between white and black and the text can read whatever you want it to say by simply typing it into that text box.

After you get past those options, you will find some more appearance options. The first one is that you get to choose one of two built-in background types. The first one (default) is shown in the first image of the review which resembles any iOS widget with its glass-engraved appearance with text in it. The other option lets you do away with the widget template altogether and make it look like the text is a part of Notification Center without being a widget. Tapping it will still yield the same application-ending results. Below that you will see the option to change the background with a picture. You will need to know the image path and you will need to manually specify if it needs to be stretched or not (this is the case with pictures that are not the correct size that you need to re-size to make them work correctly.

Under that you will see a dismiss when pressed option which basically lets you dismiss Notification Center after you have used the kill backgrounded applications command. This can be helpful, although personally, I like to hang out in Notification Center for a while afterwards, so that setting is obviously not for everyone - good thing it's disabled by default!

Under that, you will see two more switches, one that closes every application when you open Notification Center and one that closes every application when you close notification center. These can be particularly helpful; they don't make you tap anything, they automatically close the applications for you. Although if you don't configure them right, you might end up with a frowny face because it could end one of the applications that you have running that is doing something when you inadvertently forget that opening or closing Notification Center will close it on you.

The last option lets you have timed application closing. What this does is it lets you set a timer and every time that the timer runs out, WeeKillBackground Pro will close every application running in the background. This is the perfect setting for any lazy perfectionist that wants their applications ended when they're done using their phone, but doesn't have the patience to close all of the applications out themselves.

WeeKillBackground Pro works with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad and requires that you have iOS 5 because you need to have Notification Center to use it. It will set you back 99, but I think that the extensive options are completely worth it. The options are already useful, but Jonas says that there is another big update coming up. We will keep you posted on it!

Does Multiclean not do the same thing ! And with a lot more options. In fact it is easier to use as it quits the app and deletes from the background by simply quitting the app.
And you can also set it to quit all apps via Activator!

I personally use Multiclean on my 4s and have it set to quit all apps from running in the background apart from my music and it works like a charm.

So cool tweak but there are better options in my opinion.

RemoveBG in your sbsettings gives the same result for $0.99 less.

Does removebg work on 5.X though? Last I checked it didn't.

Edit: just checked and it seems it has received a 5.0 update.

Yes +1 would love that tweak. My iPod starts to run laggy and sluggish when it gets below 20mb. I wonder when backgrounder is going to get ios 5 compatibility.

Chaps - any point or conflict in installing this app if I already have killbackground installed?

      No point
The nice thing about killbackground is that it doesn't close any music app currently playing music including pandora and others

Why does protube conflict with weekill? Doesn't the same guy make both? Cydia won't let me have both on my I4s.

This appears to be totally compatible with IntelliScreenX. Don't forget to place the app in Notification Center via Settings>Notificatons...

Its not Cydia, its me. And for a reason. I can clearly see that you have downloaded an illegal version of ProTube. Piracy is the most disrespectful thing you can do to developers. I started developing ProTube back in november and arrived to a point were i could say "now its perfect" just a week a go, so that i could start another project. I won't be angry at you or anything, tho i should be, but i will just tell you to don't just think about yourself. Sure, you don't have to pay, but what about me? I spent months developing ProTube and you just steal it? I am kindly asking you to purchase it for the cheap price of $1.49, where in the end I just get $1 from. I hope you understand my point of view, and I think especially in such a relatively small community like the jailbreak community piracy is a big no go. When official version of ProTube is installed there are no problems when installing WeeKillBackground.

what "path" do you put for pics? the "var/mobile/...etc" path?
Yes, /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/[email protected] for example is a nice image (turn on stretchable image!)

Version 1.1 of WeeKillBackground Pro is live now. It has a brand new settings interface with a lot more options. If you thought version 1.0 was a steal for 99, then you'll love version 1.1.

Sorry, I should've been more clear. I'm not talking about changing the original BiteSMS pink to the Apple Messages icon. I'm talking specifically about the icon used in the screenshot above. I want to know what tweak they are using to get that exact icon. Thanks in advance!

As Richard stated above, MultiCleaner is the best kill apps/switcher tweak I've bought. And I bought nearly all of them, because the default app switching behavior just isn't out of beta yet
