  • iPad to Face Challenge from HP Slate

The tablet marketplace is getting a new combatant.

After a full half-year of dominating the marketplace as the lone tablet getting all the attention, Apple's iPad is seeing another rival step up to the tablet plate. Hot off the presses - HP is moving forward with long rumored plans to launch its new "Slate 500" tablet computer.

Much like RIM's recently announced BlackBerry-esque tablet, the Slate will be heavily promoted to business customers and sell for a retail price of $799. While HP's dedicated page for the Slate hasn't gone live yet, the news is out and sources are telling Reuters some of the must-have details about the HP Slate 500.

Carol Hess-Nickels, director of business notebook marketing at HP, emphasized the Slate's business utility. She expects retail, healthcare and insurance companies, among others, to build custom applications that take advantage of the device's portability.
The Slate runs Windows 7, has an Intel Atom processor, sports an 8.9-inch, multi-touch-enabled screen, weighs 1.5 pounds, has 64 gigs of storage, front and rear cameras, a USB port, a digital stylus pen, up to five hours of battery life per charge, Wi-Fi access, but "no built-in capability to connect to high-speed cellular networks."

HP is expected to formally launch its dedicated page to the Slate imminently.

Fail.. It's priced $100 more than apples 64gig.. It has a poorer battery life and I think the screen may b smaller.. Windows 7 is going to run like crap on it.. Poor hp.. This is not an iPad killer.. Better luck next holiday season

Took the words right out of my mouth! The initial price point alone is $300 more than the entry level iPad which will make most customers return to the Apple store!

I agree, and how does a tablet cost more then their laptops do with features and hard drive space. Stylus , I thought this was 2010.

FAIL ... Where is your webcam?. ... you have to buy one connector to put a camera in your IPAD. PAY

FAIL ... Where is your external video connector? . ... you have to buy a connector to use your IPAD with a TV. PAY AGAIN.
But ... . again, you can't use the webcam using your TV and your IPAD.

FAIL ... How can you see some pictures from your camera into your IPAD? . again ... you have to pay for an USB connector and of course you have to buy a card reader, and pray for a program that makes it possible (I've a Nikon d90 and in my PC and in my macbook pro I've the tools ... will you?). PAAAY AGAIN

FAIL ... Do you think that I have to loose more time comparing your Media player against a real compuer?

Maybe you will be one of those APPLE lovers that can't see beyond the bitten apple. Oh, my bitten apple is the best ... of course in design that's true.

The IPAD doesn't have a true operative system, IOS it's a joke. You can't compare one Multimedia player as the IPAD with a PC or a macbook air. Those last options have a real Operative System inside, not the IOS.

Poor FAN, remove the bandage that makes you blind.

F.Y.A.: I've a Macbook pro unibody first 2009 and two iphones (2G and 3G) but I can't understand people like you. Those are different products, you can't compare them.

As I understand the stylus is somewhat optional, used for precision only, as some people do with the iPad.

The fact that it runs Windows and have a USB port mean that one can tether to get 3G access, so it's not a major issue. In fact I like that, meaning that I can use a single data account (not one for my iPhone and another for the iPad).

I'm not saying it's better, but running a "real" OS has it's advantages, and one is not constrained by Apple's tight control on what you can run. It will have real multitasking (not apple pseudo-multitasking) and will immediately benefit from a large base of existing programs.

So it's not all that bad and it will compete with the iPad

      Ps.I do have 2 iPads....:-)

How will this ever compete with the iPad?

      No 3g
      No extensive App Store
      More expensive

      Why would anyone buy this???????

because apparently people want to buy an ultra-portable slate computer for the price of a laptop that does all the things their existing computer can already do.

Because it runs a real OS for one, making it more than just a novelty item.

It has an actual usb port, I can tether/use an aircard for the 3g of my choice.

It has an actual OS, meaning a cheap little app store filled with half functioning distractions is unnecessary.

And I got nothing on the price.

At least they can install MS Office. You know how much advantage that is? Just the ability to do word processing + spreadsheet on the device alone is enough to sway a business over, at least the business I am working for is interested in this device over iPad.

That is Jobs definition, now if a tablet have the power of a computer that is actually a PLUS. The ability to do more is not a bad thing.
