Don't you just wish you could easily enable FaceTime over 3G?
Beginning with the iPhone 4, FaceTime came along as a video chatting solution for iPhone 4's. It then escalated to iPod touch 4G users and finally iPad 2 users. After that, Apple made a Mac application so that Mac users could join in on the fun. So now that Apple devices are pretty common and they can all mingle with video chatting, FaceTime has become pretty common. It comes with a prerequisite, however. You must be connected to Wi-Fi or else FaceTime is a no-go.
There have been multiple ways of enabling FaceTime over 3G, such as FaceBreak, 3G Unrestrictor 5, or simply using iFile (or SSH) to edit a '.plist' file yourself. However, all of those tweaks cost money and doing the '.plist' edit yourself runs the risk of making mistakes or even worse, wasting your precious time. iOS developer Maloon figured it was time to change that with the release of a free jailbreak tweak which has been dubbed 3Gvenice, because that is the line that you have to edit into the '.plist' file in order to enable FaceTime over 3G.
Right now, the developer notes that 3Gvenice is only compatible with the iPhone 4. Unforunately, this means that iPhone 4S users can't install it to get the FaceTime over 3G feature. Just to be sure, we did a test and asked a couple of random people with iPhone 4S users to install 3Gvenice and try it. Surely, it doesn't work. iPhone 4S users can use 3G Unrestrictor 5 to get FaceTime over 3G, though.
In case you were wondering, 3Gvenice requires WinterBoard to install. It also includes the ability to toggle it on and off via a command line utility. The developer recommends that you reboot your iPhone after installing 3Gvenice for the changes to take effect. He also states that uninstalling the package will disable FaceTime over 3G.
While the major downfall for 3Gvenice is the fact that it only works on the iPhone 4, two great things about it include that it saves a lot of trouble and it's absolutely free. There are video calling alternatives in the App Store such as Skype and Tango that both allow you to video chat over 3G if you have decided that being restricted to Wi-Fi for FaceTime makes it an unusable option for you. If you have an iPhone 4 and you want to be able to use FaceTime over 3G, then I certainly recommend 3Gvenice to you. Personally, I hate the fact that it requires WinterBoard.
