  • Mac App Store Uses New DRM Code from 10.6.6

Several glitches marred the Mac App Store's launch today, with some errors seemingly related to the way that Mac OS X 10.6.6 deals with non-native partitions, and others likely just launch-day bugs. And while the problems could certainly be related to an unexpected surge of passionate interest in a $5 Angry Birds for the Mac, it could also have to do with what appears to be a significant restructuring of how Mac OS X handles DRM.

Mac OS X 10.6.6 includes a new Objective-C framework: CommerceKit. If you don't have CommerceKit.framework and the updated Security.framework on, say, a hackintoshed Dell Mini 10v, the App Store won't run, causing an error about a missing helper application. With those two frameworks, the App Store will launch, but won't allow downloads: other frameworks control that. What seems afoot here, though, is that apps bought on the Mac App Store will need to be validated with CommerceKit, similar to the digital rights management on other online marketplaces like Steam.

It's interesting that the App Store app itself seems to be nothing more than a front-end to the iTunes Store. Web previews to Mac apps are located on itunes.apple.com, just like iOS apps; there's just a "View in Mac App Store" link where the "View in iTunes" link would be on a song or iOS app preview page.

Whether the dire warnings of some digital rights proponents - that Mac OS X is headed for the same walled garden fate as iOS - come to pass is something that will remain to be seen. However, it'll be interesting if the protections Apple has implemented to protect downloaded apps do eventually migrate over to the music and iOS app side of the store.

I think every app should have a demo or lite version. But piracy is never an option. Unless it's p0rn. p0rn piracy is fine.

I can't agree with you more..... all of the in app purchases should be the free upgrades! But one of the dev's started that and Apple allowed it. I am not happy about it either....

You guys are all fighting about how piracy is bad for the app market, when you guys, probably have at least one jailbroken iPhone, make that iDevice, and one of the biggest things in the jailbreaking world is pirating apps. I believe myself, it's a horrible thing, but think about yourself, you're technically supporting the cracked apps and ect. things that lead to piracy in Cydia. learn your facts, and think about yourself. You shouldn't be worried about what other people do.

Can someone else please chime in here cos I can't articulate well enough how that statement is utter retardedness. I know it's early days yet, but I think we found the stupidest statement of 2011

The main reason me and I'd say a good few others have jailbroken their iPhone is for the Carrier Unlock.

Please move away from the cracked talk because it always leads to fights and someone always ends up banned.

iPhone users jailbreak mostly for unlock. Themes and unapproved apps it why I jailbreak. I'm just saying that those other realizes are available through jailbreak.

Not sure if this has been said, as I am on my way out, but according to Gizmodo, the DRM has already been hacked and an application is being released, called Kickback, that will allow you to download any app for free.

That's pretty damn serious. I mean, the iTunes app store has been out forever and I haven't seen anything quite like that.

Either way, I hope they get it patched up.

I neither see how I'm supporting piracy nor why we shouldn't try to get people to stop doing things that hurt other people. The dev teams are going to make what they want: jailbreak tools and cracked app installers. I don't see at the moment how using one is supporting the other. Please clarify.

So is 10.6.6 ok for Hackintosh's? I really don't care about the Apple App Store... I'm not a pirate... I just don't care about the store.

I hate to tell you none of my iDevices have ever been jailbroken.... and if I ever did I would still pay for my apps

Either my satellite internet is just too slow to work on the App Store, or Apple's servers are still getting slammed even though it's 2:10 AM Central time.

i will most likely pirate some apps from the app store because i have paid for the iphone version, paid for the ipad version, all for under a total cost of 5 and then the mac app comes out that is 10 on its own. i think that the proper apps should be full price like pages and aperture, things like that, but games that cost 2.99 on the ipad should not cost 10 on the mac app store. one that i sooted is the enigmo 2 app.. if i buy it now i would have paid for it 3 different times on 3 different devices... anyway think that the ipad version should be included in the iphone download anyway.. anyway thats end of my rant...

im not saying that im going to pirate everything because apps like angry birds and mindnode pro i have paid for because i think they are priced right for what they do although mindnode was bit on the high side and i thought it should be more like 10 but when you need an application you cant really haggle with it can you :/

      I hope you get banned.
Grow up, the pirates would have never bought the app in the first place, ie me

I already do this at brick and mortar stores. If they have a newer version of something I already have, I simply steal it. If I think their price is high for something I don't already have, I leave what I think it's worth on the shelf and walk out with the product.
