  • How to Jailbreak Using Absinthe 0.2 (OS X)

    {last updated February 1st, 2012}

This OS X only guide (Windows guide here) will teach you how to jailbreak various devices using Absinthe. The current version of Absinthe is 0.4. Note this is an UNTETHERED JAILBREAK, meaning you can reboot your phone just like you normally would.

This guide should be used with the following device/firmware combinations (if you're not sure, here's how to find your iOS firmware version and how to find your iOS device type):
    • iPhone 4S | 5.0 (9A334)
    • iPhone 4S | 5.0.1 (9A405)
    • iPhone 4S | “other” 5.0.1 (9A406)
    • iPad2 | 5.0.1 (9A405)

If you prefer the simpler version of this guide with no pictures, click here.

NOTE: The team that put together this jailbreak (saurik & MuscleNerd, both core members of iPhone Dev Team, 3 members of Chronic Dev Team: posixninja, pod2g & nikias, and the legendary planetbeing, the globally-admired iOS hacker/developer responsible for initially porting both Linux & Android to the iPhone) IS accepting donations - please feel free to donate via PayPal if you're able!

NOTE: Because Absinthe creates a backup and restores it onto your device as part of the way it gets files on the device, we recommend the device is mostly empty when you start the process. To do this, CREATE A BACKUP IN ITUNES FIRST (connect to iTunes and sync). If you're using iCloud to backup, go to Settings > iCloud > Storage and Backup > Backup Now.

ONLY ONCE YOU'VE BACKED UP, on your device go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. MAKE SURE YOU'VE BACKED UP YOUR CONTENT. You do not have to Erase All Content and Settings if you don't want to, but the jailbreak could take up to 20-30 minutes to complete if you don't, depending on what's on your device.

Alright, let's get started. First thing you'll need to do is download the Mac version of Absinthe 0.4 from mod.my/absinthemac04. Double-click the zip file to unzip it if your browser didn't automatically unzip the file.

Making sure your device is connected, double-click Absinthe to launch it. You will see the Absinthe home screen, and Absinthe should tell you your device (and firmware version) is detected. Press the Jailbreak button.

Absinthe will then go through a few status messages while it jailbreaks your device. It will stop for a bit at Waiting for reboot - not done yet, don't unplug your device yet!, and once the device has finished rebooting it will continue the jailbreak. Do not touch or unplug the device during this process.

Once the process has finished in Absinthe, it will alert you to unlock the screen if necessary and tap the "Absinthe" icon to finish the jailbreak. Remember, the icon may not be on the first page - scroll to find it.

Tapping the icon will bring up a webview with a white page, and then your device will restart.

NOTE: If you see an "Error establishing a database connection" error or a white screen which lasts longer than 1 minute, please go to Settings and turn on VPN, and wait instead. The VPN connection will give an error. This is normal. A reboot should happen a few moments after the error.

You will see the Apple logo with a progress bar quickly as the device restarts, and then your device will power back on.

NOTE: The Set Up iPhone (or iPad) GUI you see when you restore an iDevice will now appear. If you backed up with iCloud at the beginning of this tutorial, please choose Restore from iCloud Backup in the Set Up iPhone GUI, and restore from the backup you took at the beginning of this guide.

The iDevice will then restore from backup, reboot, and you're good to go.

Cydia is now on your device where the Absinthe icon was before!

That's it! You're now holding a jailbroken device. Not too bad, eh?

It seems that Absinthe requires libcurl.4.dylib version 6.0.0 whereas Mac OS X 10.5.8 has 5.0.0, this hack works by replacing libcurl4 with version 6.0.0. This involves tweaking system files, PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK!

STEP 1: Download and extract libcurl.4.dylib 6.0.0.zip http://cmdshft.ipwn.me/other/f... to your Desktop

STEP 2: Launch Terminal.app (Located in /Applications/Utilities/) and execute the following commands:

STEP 3: First we'll backup libcurl4 by renaming it

      sudo mv /usr/lib/libcurl.4.dylib /usr/lib/libcurl.4.dylib-backup

STEP 4: Now you’ll move the newly downloaded libcurl file from your Mac OS X Desktop to /usr/lib

      sudo mv ~/Desktop/libcurl.4.dylib /usr/lib/

STEP 5: Launch Absinthe and it should work fine!

Let us know if it works..

I've tried it on 2 different Macs, and after 5-20 minutes, it just crashes. Doesn't get past "Beginning Jailbreak" I've rebooted several times, and I've erased my Ipad 2, same thing.

FOR THOSE OF YOU HAVING TROUBLE AFTER INSTALLING ABSINTHE!!!

I had the same issue for quite sometime. I was attempting to jailbreak my 4s on 9A405. (downgraded from 9A406... upgraded per previous jb post, wish i hadn't but oh well) Anyway... I d/led and ran absinthe after restoring my phone. Unfortunately I ran into the same issue that many others have: I got the server error after clicking the absinthe icon, and then nothing. Read the forum, then went to settings and turned on VPN. Long story short, it didn't work. Even with a reboot. Here is what did: I re-rean the jb program to repair, but it didn't work, so I ran it again so the FULL JB process was stepped through, THEN upon completion I simply went to settings and turned on VPN. It did not take 'minutes' rather 'seconds' before the reboot process ocurred and Cydia was installed. FWIW, I did this about 5 times before it actually happened. Not sure what I did differently that time, but I did not restore, and all that needed to be done was re-run absinthe, and turn on VPN. (I did NOT have to click on the JB icon at all!!) ping me for any questions you might have. I hope this works for everyone else and I HIGHLY ENCOURAGE DONATIONS! Anything helps, seriously. Cheers, /k

check my post, but try going through the process from the beginning (not the repair) and then turning VPN on. Might take a few times, but worked for me.

This seems like it wasn't ready for public consumption judging by the numerous issues discussed in this thread.

I am in the same boat. I have tried everything and nothing is working. I have no clue how to resolve this...

Same here. 2 Verizon phones.... one still has service after 10 hours of being jailbroke the other lost service 5 mins after being jailbroke. Restoring the device seemed to be the only fix for now.

if you are getting constant fails and error messages like (when running through terminal):

ERROR: mb2_handle_receive_files: too long device filename

free about about 6gb total space and you'll be fine...the backups are pretty big files apparently

haven't seen the particular issue with the verison phones, as I'm on sprint. However, have you attempted resetting the network settings at all? just curious...

If all else fails I recommend a restore and re-jailbreak attempt..?

      Using 4S/5.01/OSX Lion 10.7.2/iTunes 10.5
      Very few small problems/warnings (a> thru d>)

      Backed up phone
      Downloaded Absinthe
      Did NOT erase phone
      Ran Absinthe
a>got "Your Backup is encrypted" message
Unencrypted phone via iTunes (auto-backup again)
      Ran Absinthe
Waited as progress bar moved, until prompt said ~"Find the jailbreak icon on your phone" (would have been clearer if it said "Absinthe" icon)
      Tapped Absinthe icon
b>Waited at white safari screen, watching activity indicator (circle turning, ie data downloading)
      c>got ~"Server not responding" message
repeated b> and c> bout 5 times, closing Absinthe mobile app and trying again
      Got scared, felt helpless
Logged onto modmyi and saw the "VPN" messages
      Opened settings, toggled VPN on
d> got "VPN connection failed" message
tried toggle again a few times
mid-try, the device just restarted itself (maybe was supposed to wait a few seconds after first VPN try?)
After device reboot, "Absinthe" icon was replaced by Cydia
      Jailbroken!

Already donated. Thanks for you hard work. To those having trouble, be patient and keep trying.
