  • How to Jailbreak Using Absinthe 0.2 (OS X)

    {last updated February 1st, 2012}

This OS X only guide (Windows guide here) will teach you how to jailbreak various devices using Absinthe. The current version of Absinthe is 0.4. Note this is an UNTETHERED JAILBREAK, meaning you can reboot your phone just like you normally would.

This guide should be used with the following device/firmware combinations (if you're not sure, here's how to find your iOS firmware version and how to find your iOS device type):
    • iPhone 4S | 5.0 (9A334)
    • iPhone 4S | 5.0.1 (9A405)
    • iPhone 4S | “other” 5.0.1 (9A406)
    • iPad2 | 5.0.1 (9A405)

If you prefer the simpler version of this guide with no pictures, click here.

NOTE: The team that put together this jailbreak (saurik & MuscleNerd, both core members of iPhone Dev Team, 3 members of Chronic Dev Team: posixninja, pod2g & nikias, and the legendary planetbeing, the globally-admired iOS hacker/developer responsible for initially porting both Linux & Android to the iPhone) IS accepting donations - please feel free to donate via PayPal if you're able!

NOTE: Because Absinthe creates a backup and restores it onto your device as part of the way it gets files on the device, we recommend the device is mostly empty when you start the process. To do this, CREATE A BACKUP IN ITUNES FIRST (connect to iTunes and sync). If you're using iCloud to backup, go to Settings > iCloud > Storage and Backup > Backup Now.

ONLY ONCE YOU'VE BACKED UP, on your device go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. MAKE SURE YOU'VE BACKED UP YOUR CONTENT. You do not have to Erase All Content and Settings if you don't want to, but the jailbreak could take up to 20-30 minutes to complete if you don't, depending on what's on your device.

Alright, let's get started. First thing you'll need to do is download the Mac version of Absinthe 0.4 from mod.my/absinthemac04. Double-click the zip file to unzip it if your browser didn't automatically unzip the file.

Making sure your device is connected, double-click Absinthe to launch it. You will see the Absinthe home screen, and Absinthe should tell you your device (and firmware version) is detected. Press the Jailbreak button.

Absinthe will then go through a few status messages while it jailbreaks your device. It will stop for a bit at Waiting for reboot - not done yet, don't unplug your device yet!, and once the device has finished rebooting it will continue the jailbreak. Do not touch or unplug the device during this process.

Once the process has finished in Absinthe, it will alert you to unlock the screen if necessary and tap the "Absinthe" icon to finish the jailbreak. Remember, the icon may not be on the first page - scroll to find it.

Tapping the icon will bring up a webview with a white page, and then your device will restart.

NOTE: If you see an "Error establishing a database connection" error or a white screen which lasts longer than 1 minute, please go to Settings and turn on VPN, and wait instead. The VPN connection will give an error. This is normal. A reboot should happen a few moments after the error.

You will see the Apple logo with a progress bar quickly as the device restarts, and then your device will power back on.

NOTE: The Set Up iPhone (or iPad) GUI you see when you restore an iDevice will now appear. If you backed up with iCloud at the beginning of this tutorial, please choose Restore from iCloud Backup in the Set Up iPhone GUI, and restore from the backup you took at the beginning of this guide.

The iDevice will then restore from backup, reboot, and you're good to go.

Cydia is now on your device where the Absinthe icon was before!

That's it! You're now holding a jailbroken device. Not too bad, eh?

You need to Erase the Content and Settings, as the guide says, then you need to wait for the iPhone to reboot Unplug it. On the iPhone you have to go through all the boring Apple screens to set the phone up. Put the correct settings in. There is no way to skip all the options and you need to authorise the phone too. Basically you need to get to the Home screen. Once you're there Plug in and hit the Jailbreak button. 2-5mins is all it took me. Follow the rest of this guide and then in iTunes restore from you backup.

Awwwww hell. This guide said I could backup to iCloud, and I would be prompted to restore from it after. Well, no prompt to restore. Just an empty iPad 2 with Cydia. I read elsewhere to backup TO COMPUTER because you can't restore from iCloud, and it appears they were right?! Any suggestions on restoring from iCloud like this guide states? If not, please change the guide ASAP to save others!

Did you try booting the Mac in safe mode and then running Absinthe? It worked like a charm on the first try for me, after hours of having my computer not recognize my 4s or ipad2.

I am having a problem after jailbreaking my 4S. Anyone getting white icons after installing applications? Some of my apps just changes to white icons. Doesn't happen 100% of the time but enough to annoy the crap out of me.

I am getting the exact same problem but it happened to my mail and camera app. I had to move it to a different location then move it back to where it was to get the image back. Nothing else would fix this, I tried respring, reboot, power off. Only happen after installing application. Hope this bug gets fixed.

      Hello all,

I feel like I am a pretty experienced iPhone user, including jailbreaking etc.

My 4S 9A405 5.0.1 was jailbroken perfectly until this morning where it kept crashing everytime I tried to put the phone display to sleep aka just hitting the power button once.

I decided to restore and rejailbreak after not being able to find out what was causing this issue. I restored and now my iPhone is 9A406.

I restored from backup, and attempting to rejailbreak.

Absinthe now sits at beginning jailbreak, this may take awhile...

Does not proceed, unless after 30 min it will say that Absinthe has quit. I retry and same thing, stuck at beginnning jailbreak

Any help on how to jailbreak this phone again? I do not want to lose any of my contacts or anythin like that

      Thanks

I purchased a 64GB factory unlocked iPhone 4GS. Is it possible that Apple has introduced something into this iPhone that prevents me from jail breaking? When I attach my iPhone and double click the Absinthe icon, the jail breaking button stays gray and will not recognize the iPhone and will not allow me to proceed.

Whats the Current Firmware version?. If it doesn't show a Jailbreak make sure your Running the Right firmware otherwise it won't work.

Been crazy busy with work so I just got around to jailbreaking my 4S today. Also after reading through this thread I wanted to make sure I had plenty of time in case I ran into any problems, like many here have! Now I wish I wouldn't have waited!!! I backed up to both iCloud & my computer. I did NOT erase all content & settings. The jailbreak took less then 5 minutes & was successful the very first time! Plus, I never got the database/VPN error. The only minor thing causing it not to be a100% perfect installation, was that my compass icon was white after completion. 1 respring fixed that issue.

Being without a iPhone that was jailbroken for so long, I had forgotten what I was missing!! Now let's see how long it's gonna take to get reacquainted with & remember how to get around the "guts" of this thing with iFile. Or creating themes. Next stop...Donation!!

I had the issue where absinthe quits unexpectedly like so many others on here. Nothing I did helped, such as restarting in safe mode, downloading and installing again, restoring the phone. Nothing would work. I am on 9A406 and the computer is an 11" Macbook air with 10.7.2 lion. This computer would not work at all. I tried on my old computer and bam, worked flawlessly. The other computer is a 13" first generation Macbook Air with 10.7.2 Lion. Same exact operating system and similar computers (intel dual core processors) leads me to believe anyone with this issue should try on another computer.

It took me three tries to jailbreak my iPhone, but I finally got it to work. Also I had to download a new version of Absinthe 0.3 and it recognized my iPhone. I now have Cydia installed.

Wow- easiest jailbreak ever! (Okay, second easiest- hard to top jailbreakme.com back in the day!) Well done guys!

But everyone please add this to the directions. Before doing the jailbreak, disable the passcode lock on your iPhone. You can re-enable it afterward.

The reason is that I got through the jailbreak with no problems, but at the end Absinthe popped up a message saying "Your iPhone has a passcode lock...the jailbreak has probably failed" or words to that effect.

Yikes! The good news is that the jailbreak seems to have worked perfectly despite that scary message. But save yourself the scare and disable the passcode lock before beginning.

      Kupe

Oh yes- forgot to say- Donation sent! Thanks to the A5 jailbreak team!
