  • Apple to Unveil Partnership with McGraw Hill on January 19th's Event

Apple was sending out invites for an education focused event set to take place in New York City this upcoming Thursday (January 19) at the Guggenheim museum. The event is said to be unveiling a partnership with publishers for textbooks as Apple has reportedly worked with McGraw-Hill for the upcoming announcement since June, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Furthermore, according to a report by Cengage Learning, which is one of the biggest textbook publishers of higher education, it seems as if they will also be attending the event. With rumors of the announcement being centered around iBooks, many people are speculating that Apple will unveil a textbook solution optimized for iOS devices or integrated with iBooks. It’s a high possibility that we will see Apple announcing partnerships with major textbook publishers.

As of right now, Bill Rieders, the executive vice president of global strategy and business development at Cengage Learning refused to comment on whether they will be partnering with Apple for the announcement or not. He did tell the Wall Street Journal that the combination of the two companies “could be exciting” though. Other major publishers such as Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Pearson couldn’t be confirmed right now but it is something that time will reveal for sure.

Stay tuned for more news regarding the event as it comes in!

I wonder if Apple will make a watered down version of the iPad for use in schools or how much they'll discount the device for school systems who are buying thousands of tablets.

As a teacher I've been waiting for the digital realm to transform the textbook industry, but right now I just don't see how it is financially possible for schools. Right now a set of 5 textbooks (math, English, science, history, elective) probably sets the school back around $250 and those books last at least 6 years. Apple will have to come up with some comparable pricing to make this work.

I would love to store my college text books on my iPad. If anyone here knows a great place to get them please pm me. The possibilities would be endless. We could underline specific things, print out particular pages..

We already have a problem with schools in the uk being tricked in to very expensive contracts to get new computers/tablets! So although I can see how this would be a good means of delivering textbooks the iPad may not be the most affordable option! Plus what if a kid breaks it! Who pays??

Dude, this would be pretty sweet. With College soon coming up for me soon, it would really help to have a digital version of text books so I don't have to buy a huge freakin' physical copy and be forced to lug that around with me wherever I go... I mean a physical copy with be good as well, but come on, nothing helps speed up looking for specific parts of a book then Ctrl-F. That, or endlessly looking around in the mess of table of contents in the front....
