  • Warning: ultrasn0w May Break GPS on Baseband 6.15.00

The Dev-Team is warning about a potential issue with ultrasn0w for iOS 4.2.1 on iPhones with the 06.15.00 baseband. An increasing number of users with that version of the baseband software are reportedly losing GPS functionality when they unlock their device. The blog post says they are looking for the root cause but haven't found it yet, and notes that it's not a problem for all or even most users with that baseband. Still, to be on the safe side, they're suggesting people should just not expect GPS to work if they want to unlock iPhones with the 06.15.00 baseband using ultrasn0w:

Update #5: Unlockers have been reporting mixed results about GPS functionality at 06.15.00. Until we can track down what differentiates those who retain GPS vs. those who lose it, be conservative and assume youíll lose GPS at 06.15.00. As we work on finding the cause (and possibly a fix), please report your personal findings in our comments section. (Update: early indications are that while 06.15.00 is capable of GPS, it will require some further hacks. But please still be conservative and assume you will lose GPS at 06.15, in case the hacks donít work).

Updated my 3G to bb 6.15 with no problems, however, when I erased all content and settings to sell the phone I am now locked out and can only see a pineapple. Any ideas how I can fix this? I've tried restoring it with the custom ipsw file but still nothing...other than that, the firmware update worked great and wasn't as choppy as the old bb I had.

You need to make a custom 4.2.1 with no baseband in it. Then restore to that.

even though it already has the ipad bb on it? I thought you couldn't downgrade the bb?

You arent downgrading the baseband. You are taking the baseband part out of the custom firmware so that it doesnt try and reflash it since you already have the ipad baseband.

Is this something that has to be done in expert or dfu mode? I'm not a hacker and simply used the simple mode to jailbreak and unlock. Not sure how to take the ipad bb out of the custom firmware.

Do it in expert mode, then when it asks you about the ipad baseband say no.

it keeps coming up with iPad firmware...I don't need a working sim in the phone to do this, do I ? It doesn't give me an option of not choosing iPad. The only other ipsw file I have is iPhone1,2_4.2.1_8C148_Csutom_restore.ipsw sorry to keep buggin you but I'm lost on this one

      You can try this:

      Open pwnage tool
      Click on expert
      Click on iPhone
      Press Blue Arrow
      Browse for your firmware
You will get a blue popup warning about the iPad baseband, click no
      Proceed as normal from here

      good news

The iPhone Dev-Team is working on a baseband downgrade method which will even work for those who updated to the 06.15 modem firmware.

MuscleNerd tweeted the following earlier today...

@Lezanz sorry still collecting data on that. But also working on a bb downgrade (!) method for those with unlockable bb

@idansc yes if the BB downgrade method works, it will work for 06.15 too.

This would be excellent news especially for those who upgraded to 06.15 for unlock and lost their GPS capabilities.

Go APP Store and download GPS STATUS and report the HORIZONTAL ACCURACY. It should be less than 75M to be OK. Unless you think your GPS is working fine, it may be not. My HORIZONTAL ACCURACY is 100M

Interesting. Would this mean 5.15.04 can be downgraded as well?

Guess I'll hold off on my 6.15 unlock for a bit
