iOS 5.1 Beta 3 can be downloaded and installed by developers today.
If you're an iOS developer and you're rocking an iPhone that has been registered for development and currently running an iOS 5.1 beta, you can open up the OTA (over the air) update section in your Settings application right now and download and install the new iOS 5.1 beta 3. You can download the firmware through Apple's developer portal in the developer section of their Web Site if for some reason an OTA update is inconvenient for you, or if you want to hold onto the firmware file.
iOS 5.1 promises to bring not only better battery life, but also improvements to the functionality of iCloud. For example, with iOS 5.1, you will be able to delete individual photos from your Photo Stream, where right now you would need to actually delete all of them and go through the pain-staking process of setting up Photo Stream again across all devices and start fresh with nothing in it. This feature was brought to us with the last beta release of iOS 5.1, but it continues through iOS 5.1 beta 3. We are excited for this feature because it was welcomed by everyone who kept complaining that their personal photos wouldn't disappear from the public Photo Stream which was viewable from any device that you had linked.
For iPhone 4S users, the, "Enable 3G" toggle will mysteriously be put back into the network settings in iOS 5.1 beta 3. With the release of the iPhone 4S, it was made public that you couldn't toggle 3G off to enable E (Edge/2G) to save battery life. The iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS had the feature, even after upgrading to iOS 5. It was strange that the iPhone 4S was suddenly absent of the feature and it left many people infuriated that they didn't have the ability to turn 3G off. To make matters worse, the iPhone 4S had bad battery life as it was.
The last large improvement for iOS 5.1 beta 3 is that it holds information for Siri to support more languages. Apple promised that they would improve the useability of Siri for other languages at the unveiling of the iPhone 4S as they had promised, Siri was in, "beta." We see information pertaining to the use of the Japanese language appearing in iOS 5.1 beta 3 but we expect much more to be arriving in either future betas or when Apple finally releases iOS 5.1 as a whole.
The update is for iPad, iPod touch, and iPhone.
